Boxed, A New Musical
Project 2015-01-19 17:01:58 +1300
Please, help us make an earthquake!
"Boxed" is a new Musical, premiering at Whitireia Theatre during the Wellington Fringe Festival 2015. It's about proud Cantabrians, tension, and learning to move forward. Set in Christchurch, 30 minutes before the earthquake hits, in a cafe of imagined lunchers.
Our show asks, "What were you doing at 12:51pm on 22/2/2011?" William, our narrator was preparing to tuck into a late lunch at his desk. Lots of other people, all over the city, were doing equally as mundane activities. It was just a regular day. Until it wasn't. But let's go back, again, and focus on another part of the city. What about a cafe full of people. What was life like for them?
The musical itself is controlled by our narrator, the writer. He serves the cafe, running the show, and constructs the work around him, building the musical accompaniment with a loop pedal and a series of instruments. But, most importantly, he will create an earthquake on stage. To do that, we'll use a Bass Synthesiser, to create a low-frequency note, connected to a series of subwoofers around the venue. This will literally shake the theatre.
The show is written by William Duignan and Waylon Edwards (from the New Zealand premier of "[title of show]", and WMT's "Grease". Our director is Moana Ete, a Toi Whakaari graduate, actor, writer, and director.
Our budget is tight. But we'd like enough capital to purchase the Moog Minitaur, a synthesiser designed to create monstrous bass frequencies, triggered by a Midi keyboard. This device is intrinsic to heart of our story. We want to make the audience to experience a magnitute 6.5 earthquake, help them comprehend what that feels likes, shake them up (mind the pun).
Thanks for your support, if we go over our $800 target, we'll add some more rewards. Cool ones, just imagine the possiblilties!

Hello contributors,
Firstly, thank you so much for contributing to this project. We believe in sharing this story far and wide, and I really appreciate your support and interest in our project. We really won't be able to do it without you. Thanks you!
We finished writing the songs and script a few weeks ago. Since then, we've hit the group running learning solos, blocking scenes, figuring out what the hell to do about setting our story in a friggin' bus.
More importantly, we've been working to bring Waylon's complex arrangements to life. We've set up our loop pedals to microphones and guitars, layer out drum sets and keyboards, in a big circle in the middle of my parents garage. It's like a creative best. And it's bearing cute, and sometimes awesomely ugly, babies. The last piece of the puzzle will be the earthquake. We can't wait to hear it!
There'll be more updates to come, if you know anyone you think would be interested in a musical about Christchurch people, please share. We're halfway to the finishline, the end is in sight. :)
Keep moving forward,
William
