Ciclovia - Miramar Peninsula 2015
Project 2014-12-01 11:51:07 +1300
In February 2014, Wellington joined hundreds of cities around the globe by hosting it's first Ciclovia event. Miramar Peninsula was opened up for a day for people to walk, cycle, scoot and rollerblade. Over 2,500 people came and if you were there, you'll remember the magical sense of freedom you got from experiencing that beautiful piece of coastline, without cars whizzing by. Watch our aerial video to jog your memory of the day.
If you weren't able to make it - do not fear! 2015 will hopefully see 3 more summer Ciclovia events around the Peninsula.
These events typically cost a city between $25,000 and $1 million dollars each (that's the famous Los Angeles CiLAvia). Here in Wellington, we ran our first event for just under $7,000 thanks to a huge number of volunteers and lots of local sponsorship.
Our feedback from this year's participants was very loud and clear: 'Please, run this event again....and again and again!!!'. Our Ciclovia planning team of volunteers are as enthusiastic as everyone else and we're planning on three more next summer. We have road closures confirmed for Feb 8, 15 and March 8 2015 but we need to fundraise to make the events happen.
Traffic Management costs around $8,000 for all three. Then there's advertising costs, the cost of making an amazing video for future support, the cost of putting on shuttles to help people get there, the cost of a coordinator to pull all the details together and the cost of activities organized for people on the day.
Wellington City Council is kindly contributing $5000, but we need to fundraise another $5000 to cover the full costs of the event. Thanks to Pedal Ready, The Chocolate Fish Cafe and Beautiful Bike Bags, we've got some great rewards on offer!
Ciclovia is a fantastic civic event, that brings Wellingtonians together in a fun and active way. We look forward to helping it have a regular spot on the calendar by making these next three events a wild success.

Thank you so much for your support. We'll be able to see who pledged what tomorrow, but if you would like to receive your 'Bicycle made for two' or 'Bicycle made for THREE' reward this Sunday, please email [email protected], so we can set up the date.
If you can't make it this Sunday, do not fear! There's another event next Sunday (Feb 15) and then a final one of March 8. For more details you can visit www.ciclovia.org.nz.
Thanks again supporters. We salute you.

Ciclovia 2015 update
20/01/2015 at 7:35 PM
To all you Ciclovia fans,
Firstly, thanks for your support and interest in this year's series of Ciclovia events.
We're excited to bring you more opportunities to roam free on the Miramar Peninsula, on Sunday, February 8, Feb 15 and March 8.
This is a short update to let you know that we've reduced our funding target from $5,000 to $2,000. That was due to the wonderful sponsorship of Go Traffic Management, who have reduced their costs in support of the event. Go Go Traffic Management!
We're over half way to our target, but only have a few weeks left to do everything we can to make sure we can get there. If you have friends or family who you think might support the event, flick 'em an email with our page link here, or share our campaign through Facebook. Good old social media.
We look forward to seeing you out on the Peninsula. As long as we hit our $2000 target, we'll be distributing our rewards before the first event.
