About

Let's MOVE New Zealand!

Project 2014-11-25 10:44:57 +1300

Let's Move New Zealand!

I have spent my life either rehabbing from injury or helping others as a Physio rehab theirs. It's all boiled down to one thing. Movement, or lack of it!

Support me to do 'Live The Dream' and help me reach my goal to Move New Zealand in three ways.

  1. By helping cover my living costs through the ‘Live The Dream’ Social Business Accelerator you help kiwis that NEED to move (kids at school, mentally unwell/financialy struggling) connect with people who LOVE moving (your favourite sports star, favourite hip hop dancer or favourite gym trainer).

  2. You help to inspire more people to use their time to do projects New Zealand needs. You make the New Zealand better.

  3. Your support helps me continue to give free lunchtime fun movement sessions in parks around Wellington to help move Wellington (See 20 Minute Boost)

Starting to sound like something positive and useful? Yes? Treat yourself to a fun reward on the side and read on below to see more info.

Why do a Pledge Me for this?

  • I believe there is a method which can inspire more kiwis to bring their ideas to action and make a better NZ.

  • The method involves this, going to you, the people who see the picture and understand this. If we can get enough people to show support we can send a powerful message to those on the cusp of acting on an important idea to make New Zealand better.

  • Ask yourself, your family or your gran what they would have done to make an impact and what blocked the road?  If you knew there was a community to support you doing this, what difference would it have made?

What is this project Bart?!

  • This project will move New Zealand and the world, literally. It will connect people who NEED (possibly you or kids at school, mentally unwell, financialy struggling, and the office champ) to move with people who LOVE moving (your favourite sports star, gym instructor, yoga teacher, kick boxing buddy, and your commuity legend!) for free. Using App and online technology to make being able to move fun, simple and free.

  • Some of this has started with people around the world already helping! Three weeks ago I started giving open exercise sessions every lunch time using my physio knowledge to help people get out of their office, move, connect socially, boost themselves to be healthier and happier people. This will continue and you are invited, infact, you and all your friends are invited (see here for details -https://www.facebook.com/BoostBnB ).

Why we need this

  1. 2 out of 3 people in NZ are obese or overweight. We are 3rd in theOECD for Obesity (behind the USA and Mexico!). The rates are only rising.

  2. Physical inactivity is a leading cause of disease and disability say the World Health Organisation. Globesity is here now and even the World Economic Forum are talking about it. We need more happy hormones in our body and activity gives us them.

More Happy Hormones

This is an issue government cannot handle without our help, it is too big, too widespread, too complex. We need to lead it from the bottom up, together working with government, to really make an impact.

What is ‘Live The Dream’?

  • ‘Live The Dream’ is a 10 week social business accelerator program starting 1 December (through until 20 February).

  • It is a full time program made to make projects that change the world hapen - Senior Business Mentors, advisors, and a others with the same mission to help learn and fill the knowledge gaps.

  • ‘Live the Dream’ does not cost anything to be a part of but the short notice shoulder tap means I will not have any income over this time to pay for food, rent, the bus etc (see breakdown in attached sheet). Sink or swim - I’ll need your help!

Bart, are you not loaded??

  • Haha No. From 2010-1013 I have spent money earned on learning and experiencing as much as I could. I came back to New Zealand a year ago to help and make an impact. Over the last year have worked hard to pay most of that debt off and continue rapidly leanring as much as I could. I also remain to have a hefty student loan which compiled some interest while away.

  • I could continue working as a physio to pay this all off over the next 10 years, or get straight into making an impact in ways not possible years ago. I see a need for people in medical professions to step out, connect with the social business and tech realm and make an impact the world needs. Social business and tech can contribute to this change but it is not something we were taught in our degrees.

Why do ‘Live The Dream?’

  • 'Live the Dream' fills this knowledge gap of things

  • My working career I have been a physiotherapist for individuals suffering from persistent pain, injuries forcing them off work, professional athletes, professional teams as well as helping grow and manage physiotherapy clinics. I have also spent the most recent years playing hockey professionally in Holland learning to understand more about the high performance environment through experiencing it first hand and pushing my own limits.

  • 'Live the Dream' offers me the opportunity to be in a thriving environment, surrounded by mentors, and a team to learn about business startups. It gives a platform to collaborate and apply all the current and emerging knowledge of health and happiness on a larger scale.

Thats me in the Goalie gear!

What we plan to achieve by the outcome of Live The Dream

  • To be ready and pitching for investment from individuals and from the crowd.

In 3 - 6 months we plan to be at a point where this business will fund our living costs and continue to grow.

3 years I see a larger core team of 10-20 people working with a network of 1000+ professionals around the world to make people healthier and happier.

Final note...

Anyone who knows me knows that when I see or hear of someone doing/working for others selflessly my eyes light up! I am gone, searching and learning to understand more! Who is involved? How does it work? How are they doing it!? Fantastic!

I live minimally, sacrifice indulgences and ‘nice to haves’ for the bare essentials: a high power to weight ratio for impact. No glam, no glitz just what it takes to move the world to more happiness and open the door for others to do the same.

So here it is, open for the public to see and decide. Have a look at the fun rewards on the side. Support me to do 'Live The Dream' and help acheive the dream to move New Zealand and along the way inspire you or the next person to action projects New Zealand need. I will give you updates, seful insights, learnings and #Elsie’s that I am implementing for the sake of health and happiness. Follow me on my blog, twitter and facebook. I look forward to seeing you at an up coming Boost!

Thank you...

For reading! Thank you to all the wonderful people who have helped me - there are too many to name and words do my gratefulness no justice.

Please ask questions if you have them!

Thank You

3 weeks of Live the Dreamt o Go

01/02/2015 at 6:14 PM

Hello everyone,

Wow, how time flies!

3 weeks of Live the Dream to go, the last 7 weeks have been amazing. Jam packed with information, learnings, and great people. I had one mentor describe this to me 'like trying to drink from a firehydrant' and he is on point.

I will be writing posts on my journal to update you more specifically about the process once the course is over. But as some of you may have noticed the blog started strong and has been a bit slower over the past few weeks as things have been heating up!

We have identified a number of problems around inactivity. I have been out talking to different government departments as weel as business leaders and individuals who are affected by inactivity and those that are extremely active.

One issue is our work place culture in NZ, it is letting us down and because of it we are quite low in the OECD for work place productivity while not helping our health statistics and personal wellbeing. This is an issue I am looking into being a part of changing but not the main focus for Live the dream. While going through Live The Dream I have decided to look into solving an issue people are facing on knowing about all the fun activity going on around them that is classed as physical activity but some might not realise because having fun with friends comes to the forefront of your mind first. Examples of this is Salsa dancing, learning a martial art, going kyaking in the harbour or a number of other activities that wellington has to offer (and NZ). We are working at solving this through the wonders of technology, a bold ask and a tough process that I have little understanding about but am reaching out to the Wellington tech community who are being of huge help.

I will be updating more regularly now on the Journal and will be back dating some posts to the relevant time period through Live The Dream.

I am and will be forever grateful for your contributions, this experience has been of immense learning which is not over yet!

Much love,

Bart
