The Homes for Unsung Heroes project will be part of the Splore 2015 Festival and is an environmental art installation celebrating native insects.
Insects are a crucial part of our world, but their importance is often overlooked, Homes for Unsung Heroes will celebrate their contribution by building a series of insect friendly structures, each of which will be based on an iconic New Zealand state house or flat.
These homes will be sited around the festival as a reminder to people of the importance of insects but also as a practical method of supporting the population of native insects in the area. The intention is to have the homes permanently sited after the festival and to develop ways to encourage others to build their own Homes for Unsung Heroes.
I will be working closely with the Splore team, staff at the Tapapakanga Regional Park, where the festival is held and entomologists for expert knowledge on native insect habitats.
The project has a small initial fund of about $1000 to develop the ideas and build several insect homes. I am seeking a further $1000, this will mean being able to not only build more homes and save more insects, but also more designs for specific native insects and to make the plans freely available to everyone who wishes to build their own insect homes. This will support the longer-term goals of the project to encourage the use of insect homes more widely.
The People Behind Homes for Unsung Heroes
For past twenty years I have been involved in a many different art projects, working with a diverse range of people and communities from the homeless to farmers and now insects.
For as long as I can remember I have been interested in wildlife, in all its shapes and sizes but recently I have developed a passion for the unseen work of the insects and other small creatures that is going on mostly unseen but none the less playing a crucial role to the health of the planet.
'Homes for Unsung Heroes' is a chance to provide places for native insects to shelter, breed and thrive to offset some of the damage being done to their native habitats.
