Float Our Boats - Sailability Hawke's Bay

Project 2014-10-07 09:22:12 +1300

Help Float our Boats! This is the call from the team at the Sailability Hawkes’s Bay Trust, who are looking to fund the final $5000 for their two new liberty sailboats.

The sailboats are specially modified so that any physically or intellectually disabled sailor may feel the freedom of doing something for themselves out on the water in Hawke's Bay.

Spokesperson, Katy Kenah says, ‘For sailors like, Trent - who likes to sign himself Trentraplegic, both claiming and identifying his disability, it means that a joystick allows him to control the sailboat.’

For the sailors, the opportunity to overcome any limitation on their ability out on the water is truly empowering.

Here's what some of our sailors have to say about what sailability gives them:

  • "Freedom... and the feeling of being able to do sometning you wouldn't think a person with a disability would be able to do." Otis
  • "I can be by myself, but around others and I'm able to relax." Joel
  • "I like that people accept me for who I am...and that I can be myself with no pretences or embarressment." Paul
  • "We are alive on the wind with the breeze in our hair with a fast sailing yacht and freedom to spare." Dennis
  • "I can go in the boat by myself, I can go fast, I have fun with the others." Kathryn

‘There is always a way to get things done. It may not be conventional but, there is always a way’.

This is the creed of Samuel Gibson who was less than five minutes old when both his legs were broken by a well-meaning midwife. Born with a genetic bone condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bones) he cannot walk, is 3 feet tall, yet considers himself lucky! His quest for testing his boundaries on the water can be seen here and applying that tenacity off the water has seen him win the coveted ‘Attitude Enterprise Award’ as featured on the television programs; Attitude, Breakfast Business, One News and Close Up.

PledgeMe is the way we'd like to see the final $5000 thing done - so...what do you say?

Will you help Float our Boats?

For those who’d like to know more about becoming involved either as a sailor or a volunteer, Katy can be contacted at [email protected].

Being a writer is a 'home alone' pursuit... but through my writing I've had some amazing experiences, particulary ones where I've been able help out others, such as this pledge me event - the book that's been put up for a pledge me reward has recently been adapted for radio and you can hear the story and read along with your pledge me reward book  here

Acclaimed children's author Tessa Duder is also a sailor worth her salt...most recently crossing the Tasman in a fleet of Tall Sailing Ships and launched her writing career with the much loved title, Night Race to Kawau.  Her new collection of short stories for children all have a sailing theme; adventure, action and kids just getting out on the water as the title says.  If you choose one of her books as your pledgeme reward it has been personally signed by Tessa during her visit to Napier taking in Taradale Primary and Haumoana Schools.  Tessa is proud to support the work of Sailability as she is also an ardent supporter of the Spirit.  So...come on...help us FLOAT OUR BOATS!
