See Room Four Through To The End Of 2014!

Project 2014-07-04 16:39:48 +1200

Hi! We're Rosalee and Daegan, two graduate fine art students who are good friends from way back (fourth form highschool in fact, woah...)

Together we run Room Four, an open studio and art space in central Christchurch. We started out as a group of four, but now it's just the two of us and things are getting a bit grim on the financial front!

Room Four has been running since the beginning of 2012, when we fell in love with it's high slanted ceiling, grungy skylight and low-hanging lights.

So what do we actually do? Room Four is a not–for–profit space with the purpose of providing a creative workplace for both individual and collaborative projects, and a venue for emerging artists to show work. We hold regular events that are diverse and experimental in nature. Over the last two years we’ve held exhibitions by emerging artists of photography, painting, printmaking, film, sculpture and graphic design, as well as drama and dance productions. We also hosted Christchurch Zinefest, and are hoping this will be able to take place in the space again this year. In between events, Room Four is utilised as a studio by photographers, performers and designers, and as a space for public talks and discussions.

A highlight for us was FORT – a month-long event over the summer of 2012–13, where visitors were invited to build the fort of their dreams out of cardboard boxes and tubes that we’d collected from the side of the road over the course of several weeks. The event attracted people of all ages; parents brought their children to play during the day, and gig-goers dropped in from the bar at night. It was hilarious, chaotic, constantly changing, and probably cleaned The Warehouse out of packing tape.

Room Four was lucky enough to be kickstarted with grants from both Creative New Zealand and Christchurch City Council. As we soon discovered though, money quickly disappears, and finding ongoing funding is not easy! There were a few months last year where we ended up covering the rent out of our own pockets and resorted to a series of sausage sizzles in the hope of making some quick cash. Let’s just say we probably wouldn’t try that again…

We have a full schedule of exhibitions and events lined up for the rest of the year, including Body Festival performances, Christchurch Zinefest, and several exhibitions by local artists, which we are super excited about. Beyond this year though, we think it’s time to bring Room Four to a close. Like other artist–run spaces, ours has a life span, and in keeping with the transitional nature of our city, we’d like to hand it over to be transformed into something new.

We have no desire to close Room Four before the end of 2014 however, and we don’t want to let people down by throwing in the towel early. Unfortunately we also know that we can’t continue without funds. We want to give the rest of this year our all, and give Room Four the send off it deserves – probably in the form of a raging Christmas party, but we’re open to ideas!

We’re asking for $2000, which will cover our running costs and rent for 2 months. This will buy us time to find the remaining funds we need for the last few months of the year. We feel incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to try our hand at something like this and we’ve learned a lot. We’d also like to think that we’ve provided something pretty valuable and worthwhile to an earthquake-ravished city, where spaces for creative types are still hard to find!

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit our page, and please consider helping us to continue helping the creative community here in Christchurch!

Love Rosalee and Daegan x
