Turn On The Sun!

The Blueskin Resilient Communities Trust (BRCT) is working on developing a small community wind farm through its company, Blueskin Energy Ltd. But that’s not all the Trust does. Located in a small community office, BRCT provides energy advice, Home Performance Assessments, Climate Change Planning, solar advice and more. We’re dedicated to building community resilience and providing an example for others. We want to walk the talk at our own office and demonstrate simple clean-tech solutions. And..
We’re almost there!
We just need a little more money to complete our project of Solar Panels on the office roof. The Blueskin Resilient Communities Trust’s office at Waitati School has three computers, lights, heaters and hot water, all powered by electricity. The solar panels will turn our building into a mini-power station, with electricity both used within our office and exported. We’ll become a more efficient, low carbon workspace.
Our office is based in Blueskin Bay, near Dunedin, at the Waitati School hub. The team of Scott Willis, Niki Bould and the many community volunteers is working hard to make the area, with its 3000 residents, truly sustainable, with its own power and food supplies. If we can complete this solar install on our office there will be a number of benefits:
- Waitati school where our office is, will use the panels as an educational tool, allowing the students to learn more about renewable energy;
- Blueskin Bay residents will have access to data on the efficiency of solar panels in our local climate;
- Waitati school ‘BoT’ will see ‘proof of concept’ and be stimulated to install its own solar;
- And the money BRCT will save on power costs can to be put to good use in other projects.
- Plus any extra power generated can be used by the school. Win-Win-Win for all!
Thanks to the Bendigo Valley Foundation, we’ve already raised $1500 towards the cost of the equipment which;
Solarcity are generously supplying to us at a discounted rate.
Enasolar have generously donated us a shiny new very cool inverter that will transform the DC electricity into friendly AC electricity for us in our office and the school.
So that’s where you guys come in… the last $1650 to cover the installation and commissioning tools to promote solar. We’ve got the installation quote and “the man” all tee’d up to do it. CAN YOU HELP???
If we ended up over target (that sounds good!), we’d firstly purchase an online tool to display energy output from the panels at all times (approx. $200) and anything over that (that sounds even better!), would be put towards solar panels for the school roof.

And only $300 short of our target! A very exciting last few days while we watch to see whether we'll get over the line, finger's crossed and last messages going out!

Wow! We're at $1050, only $600 away from 'Turning on the Sun'. That's largely thanks to the new reward offered by Jenna Packer who is both a nenowned painter and printmaker, but also to the incredible support you, our community, have offered. With only 14 days to go, we're getting a little nervous and a little excited. Will we get there? BTW, we had a bet going on how long it would take to get to halfway ($825) and Scott lost, and paid his pledge.
Please help us with one last push, and spread the word wide and far. We've tentatively booked the installation for the week of the 2nd September and we're itching to confirm it and plan the party!

Jenna Packer's paintings are very well known (for Dunedin residents, you may remember the "States of Emergency" exhibition at Milford earlier this year), and her prints have also been exhibited all around NZ, over to Australia, France, Japan and the UK. So we are extremely pleased that Jenna has offered 5 limited edition prints especially to help 'Turn on the Sun'.

One thousand to go, with $650 reached today! Thank you to our special pledger who got us to the $650 mark - it exciting to be edging ever closer! Our next stage goal is $825 and bets are on in the office now on how long it'll take to make it to that interim goal, with an additional pledge from the loser as part of the bet...

Another sunny day, another day closer to our target - thank you all generous pledgers anon and not - we so much appreciate your support and love the way that small donations can make something relatively small and yet significant happen.
One benefit to all who pledge that we haven't been upfront about is that since BRCT is a local charity, you will receive a tax refund on your pledge. If you think that this will help others assist a local charity to develop its own electricity supply and provide an educational resource for the community, then please do share this information!

Just a few quiet hours since the quiet launch of our PledgeMe campaign, and already, even in this low solar part of the day (i.e. nightime) we have some Pledgers - thank you those of you burning the early evening night oil! Its a good thing that the office only really hums during the day, when the sun is shining. Because that's when the solar is giving. When we start doing 24 hours shifts, we'll have to install a small wind turbine as well!
