MONKEY Performed By Warwick Broadhead

Project 2014-06-22 16:53:39 +1200

Warwick Broadhead, New Zealand's reputed living treasure, is now preparing for a solo show telling the story of  Monkey.

Monkey is a solo theatrical experience in the actor's home on Waiheke Island. Presented in the afternoon on the first Saturday of each month at 3 in the afternoon over an extended period, possibly two years. The performances are told in serial form, rather like Charles Dickens' release of some of his major novels. Warwick will link the story at each performance yet each performance is a gem in the crown of the overall story.

Broadhead's theatrical brilliance and diversity will be reflected in this, his latest creation of the story of the ancient Chinese legend of Monkey (Monkey King, Journey to the West). First written from the oral telling in the 14th Century. This story is one of China's best known. It tells of a monk sent by the Goddess of Compassion, Quan Yin, to journey from China to India to receive the sacred teachings from  the Buddha and bring them back to China to help establish Buddhism there. This novel is based on a real life event. This story is now highly embellished in the novel Monkey. With demons, magic, gods and goddesses, tribulations and triumphs.

Warwick's spiritual teacher, Namgyal Rinpoche, suggested he explore this story as a theatrical piece. It has taken him many years to realise and understand how to bring it to fruition within his current capabilities. As usual many friends are aiding and abetting this process of bringing the work before an audience. Performing is one of Warwick's gifts which is his pleasure to share.

A master in the art of story telling, Broadhead draws on this ancient fable to weave an ingenious tale that takes many tangents into the fascinating and the surreal. Combining ritual, slapstick, philosophy, music and dance, Broadhead gloriously transforms into narrator and characters to portray this journey that presents ideologies of life.

Warwick will soon be 70 and since his twenties has performed, directed, made costumes and sets, worked with hundreds of people throughout New Zealand in his extravagant theatrical masterpieces. He has also performed The Hunting of the Snark and other solo shows in over 600 private homes in New Zealand and overseas.

You are invited to further participate in the preparation of this exciting, theatrical project at any stage.

Warwick's team is:-

Performance guide:- Steven Hollins

Thespian and Restauranteur

Jonathan Baxter:- recognised world master of origami.

Jonathan will be creating origami pieces to suggest ideas and characters in the story and enhance Warwick's overall performance. He is a man who is bursting with enthusiasm and ideas.

The Prayer Tree by Michael Leunig

02/09/2014 at 8:00 PM

Warwick and I have just discovered this book. Here is an excerpt from it we would like to share;

A person kneels to contemplate a tree and to reflect upon the troublesand joys of life. The person imagines mornings and evenings in a great forest of prayers, swarming and teeming with life. The person is learning to pray.

Donning the Tea Cosy

16/08/2014 at 9:16 PM

Never trust a man, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on. Billy Connolly

Picture Warwick, age 4, adorable, cute, tight blond curls. He is sitting at the dinner table with his family. Everyone's eaten but must stay at the table. Father hasn't finished his cup of tea. Mother has just gone to refill the teapot. Warwick squirms with boredom. He wants to get down. No one is talking to Warwick. (FLASH!) He reaches for the teacosy, pulls it on his head, pulls a face. MAGIC! Everyone is looking at him. A star is born!
