About

Send Melanie Child To NZ Eco Fashion Week!

Project 2014-06-08 21:44:58 +1200

Hey, my name is Mel and I have been accepted to show my eponymous upcycled clothing label 'Melanie Child' at NZ Eco Fashion Week 2014.

(WOOHOO- The target has been reached! Thank you! Please feel free to pledge anyway, anything over and above the target will be going towards better equipment/materials, and growing my label further)

The term 'upcycling' means to reuse discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher qualiy or value than the original.

I am passionate about creating garments that are thought provoking and sculptural with a dark edge, from secondhand and discarded materials..we live in a world saturated by mass production and consumption - why add to it?

Melanie Child 2014

Now in its second year, NZEFW is being held in Lower Hutt Wellington from 23-27 July 2014, and is the only national eco/sustainable fashion platform.

Attending this event is the next step in growing my label and gaining national and international recognition as one of New Zealands up and coming eco fashion designers. It will also enable me to network with other like-minded labels, which has thus far been few and far between.

I intend on driving up to Wellington from Dunedin so that getting about with my collection, my awesome helper aka my sister/model and 16 month old daughter is a lot easier! (Who wants to wait on a bus or taxi with ten outfits when you've got a runway to show at!?)

Melanie Child 2014

I recently won the overall award of excellence in The Oversew Fashion Awards show, and am putting some of the prize money towards this trip (the rest is going towards some much needed equipment!), I just need a little more funding to cover my costs. These include the entry fee, fuel, and the ferry costs to Wellington and back.

I am asking for $1500..by pledging you are helping me to achieve my dreams AND supporting New Zealand Eco Fashion, two birds with one stone!

Thanks for taking the time to read my pledge :)

Fashion Week, rewards

19/08/2014 at 5:59 PM

Hello Pledgers,

Well we are all back and recovered from NZ Eco Fashion Week! We had a great time, showed the 10 piece collection and networked with some awesome sustainable designers. Since returning I have managed to get into the Star with fellow designer Senorita AweSUMO where we discussed sustainable fashion and NZ Eco Fashion Week which was great follow up, also Dunedin Wears the Pants did an amazing blog post about my label. Links to those are here:

There are also a couple of things in the pipeline as a result of showing in Wellington, which is awesome!

To the pledgers who are getting rewards - I am really sorry I haven't gotten them out to you yet! Most of them are ready, I just need to get a few things and print some images, and then I will send them out.

So I just wanted to update you all, thanks again for your support!

WE MADE IT!!!!

With four days to go, the target has been reached!! Thank you so much for pledging, if you have chosen a reward I will get the info in a few days, and then most probably your reward will get to you after Eco Fashion Week..unless you chose a postcard of course :) People are still most welcome to pledge, anything over and above will go on better equipment and materials, and growing my label further. You have helped me achieve this goal, and I really appreciate it!

THANK YOU

Mel

New rewards

21/06/2014 at 7:52 PM

Evening guys, just added a couple of new rewards.. With just under two weeks to go we're at $880. that's frickin awesome!

Some images of rewards

20/06/2014 at 10:36 AM

Morning :) Here are a few examples of some of the rewards..please note that design/materials may differ slightly from pictures - the beauty of upcycling is that every piece is individual.

The campaign has now raised more than half of the target, thank you all so much!

Obviously things like the choc bar and typed note are self explanatory, and the print/postcard/backstage photo haven't happened yet so you'll just have to wait and see!

armwarmers

reconstructed jeans

collar coin/card purse

Woohoo!

16/06/2014 at 10:11 PM

We are now more than a third of the way to meeting the target! That's so awesome, thanks for believing in my dream :D I will post some pictures over the next day or two of some of the rewards so you can see examples of what you might get. Have a good evening everyone, Mel

Just a note to say thanks.

14/06/2014 at 10:18 PM
