LONG TIME COMING - A Short Film

Project 2014-05-30 15:01:55 +1200

Slim Charles Productions presents Long Time Coming - the second part of a planned trilogy of short films from Tom Augustine. Coming in December 2014

The Story

Long Time Coming follows Pat, a down on his luck ex-rugby player, who risks everything after a local high school girl is drugged and sexually assaulted on camera by a fellow student. When the video surfaces on the internet, the victim takes her life prompting the offer of a reward from enraged members of the community if revenge is exacted on the boy who committed the act. This gives Pat the incentive he needs to take justice into his own hands.

Set in the heart of South Auckland, this short film will confront timely themes of modern masculinity and cycles of violence in a compelling way, as well as pose crucial questions of how justice is defined in modern society.

Why help us make this film?

Director Tom Augustine says – ‘I want to make films that speak to, or help make sense of, the real world.

Misogynistic crimes are sadly far too common in modern society, their impacts felt in their victims, their families, and their communities. Long Time Coming takes real events as its inspiration, asking the crucial question – is violence as a response to violence just? Is this what you want? As a filmmaker, I have attempted to craft a thought-provoking and poignant drama-thriller. Hopefully the story and the ideas portrayed speak to you, and raise important, hard to answer questions.

By helping to make this film, you are supporting local, up-and-coming filmmakers visualize a project that has been a long time coming in and of itself (pun intended) and helping to contribute to the dialogue about serious issues such modern masculinity, rape culture and violence in our society.’

The Crew

Tom Augustine – Director/Writer
Tom is currently pursuing his Masters in Directing at the University of Auckland and Long Time Coming is his project for 2014. His previous short credits include the drama Big Man, surreal comedy Deep Fry Paradise and documentary Step Into The Ring, all completed in his pursuit for his BA Hons in Screen Production in 2013. He’s also made stage productions with Tell Tale Theatre Company including last year’s Hell’s Teeth.

Puteri Raja-Ariff – Assistant Director
Having previously served as both Producer and Assistant Director on Augustine’s Big Man and as Producer/Director of her own documentary, Insha’allah (2013), we’re excited to announce Puteri is collaborating with Tom once again in the role of AD on Long Time Coming while she pursues her Masters in Creative Producing, also at the University of Auckland.

Sarah Davies – Co-Producer
Sarah is currently pursuing her Masters in Screenwriting at the University of Auckland. With a background in marketing, connections to boot as well as some writing/directing credits of her own including Death Metal (2013) to demonstrate her creative flair, we couldn’t think of anyone better in the role.

Rebekah Ngatae – Co-Producer
With tertiary qualifications in both Business and Film, TV & Media and experience in local film festivals, talent agencies and film sets (including Big Man), we’re stoked to have Rebekah bring her eclectic set of skills to the crew!

The Cast

We have some exceptionally talented people lined-up for the key roles of Pat, Alice, Marissa and Raymond and can’t wait to announce them to the world shortly. Watch this space!

Please pledge!

Long Time Coming will be in production July 3rd-9th, 2014. We will do our absolute best with the resources we have, which we’re stoked to say already includes awesome equipment – including a Sony F5 and some amazing lenses supplied by the University of Auckland. However, we would be extremely grateful for every bit of help we can get to tell this story. Your pledges will go toward the following costs:

  • Location hire
  • Props, costumes, make-up effects
  • Feeding everyone for the duration of the shoot
  • Payment of professional cast and crew
  • Additional equipment (batteries, light hire etc.)
  • Post-production (sound mixing, colouring, all that fun stuff)

We also have some sweet rewards that we hope will entice you. Check those out to the right and please spread the word. We need all the help we can get. Thanks for checking out our campaign! For more on Long Time Coming, check out our info pack here and look out for its release this December!

We did it!

22/06/2014 at 7:44 PM

Wow, guys! We reached our $3000 goal! Thank you all so much for all your support. We really cannot put into words how much it means to us and we're so excited to put it all to good use.

But ever the sucker for a challenge, we now want to go for a cool $4000! With a few (a fair, fair few) extra dollars in hand, we can set aside even more money for post-production services which we really feel could make all the difference to the film. It may sound a little ambitious as we only have a couple of days left, but hell, you can't blame a crew for trying!

So if you haven't already (or even if you have!), please find it in your heart (and pocket) to give, even a little counts! And to sweeten the deal, if you donate up to $50 before the deadline, you will be provided with the best hug or high five from me, the director, that you have ever experienced at your home or place of business, along with all the other awesome rewards (seriously, I am world-renowned for the quality of my hugs). If you donate over $50, along with all the other awesome rewards we'll chuck in a super cool Slim Charles Productions/Long Time Coming T-Shirt! Sound good? Yeah, it does.

Thanks heaps! Truly.

Tom and the Long Time Coming team

P.S - the T-Shirt offer only applies to donations after the posting of this message. Cheers :)

Introducing our Director of Photography... Daryl Habraken!

19/06/2014 at 3:55 PM

We are stoked to announce Daryl Habraken will be coming on as the Director of Photography for Long Time Coming. With over 13 years experience in the industry, Daryl's evidently worked hard to accrue a ridiculous amount of credits in television, commercials, music videos and a tonne of other projects so it's only natural he'd move on to do a student short film.

In all seriousness though, we are extremely lucky to have such a seasoned professional work on this project with us and we're incredibly excited to see what he does with Long Time Coming!

Stay tuned for another very special announcement, re: casting, very soon!

Cheers,
Rebekah and the Long Time Coming team

More Blu-Rays added to the rewards!

17/06/2014 at 1:36 PM

Miss out on the blu-ray reward? Not to worry, we've awkwardly added another reward that is identical to the previous blu-ray reward which we evidently shouldn't have put a limit on! So for a very generous pledge of $50 or more, the blu-ray of the works of Director, Tom Augustine can be all yours!

The blu-ray will include the following short films:

Deep Fry Paradise (Comedy, 2013, 2min)
Step Into The Ring (Documentary, 2013, 10min)
Big Man (Drama, 2013, 12min)

And of course, Long Time Coming once we've finished it up! We also hope to have a little behind-the-scenes content for ya. Then on top of THAT you'll get your name on our donor wall, a digital download of both Long Time Coming and it's soundtrack, the knowledge that you contributed in a big way to a small production from some up-and-coming filmmakers AND our everlasting gratitude. Sounds like a barg to me so get pledgin'! Please.

And thank you,
Rebekah and the Long Time Coming team

Goodness me...

14/06/2014 at 12:11 PM

First off... Over $1k in only a few days? Guys. And gals. That is nuts. Thank you SO much to all who have pledged so far. You really don't know how much this means to us and the project. Every dollar is getting us more and more excited about it all.

Anyway, we held some more auditions this week to round out the key cast. Just a few callbacks and meetings to be had then hopefully all will be revealed in the next week or so! We'll post another update when it all goes down.

Also, we're working on getting some more blu-rays as rewards so if you'd like one of those, check back early next week!

Thanks again, y'all!

Yours always and forever,
Rebekah and Tom and the Long Time Coming team
