Inspired people, new ideas, innovation and exciting performance are the lifeblood of theatre practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. BATS Theatre’s Purpose/Kaupapa is to provide a supportive, professional and accessible theatre venue that fosters the development of practitioners, audiences and New Zealand performance work.

The Christchurch Tour of MUNTED....

When the devastating earthquake struck on February 22nd in Christchurch we were all in different places. Victoria, our Christchurch native was studying theatre over in Paris. She began to jot down thoughts in the aftermath, while waiting to hear from her family. Soon after, we both decided the best way we could process the event and reach out was through our craft. The result is MUNTED: a ground breaking documentary theatre piece.

After successfully premiering MUNTED at BATS Theatre, Wellington in January of this year Bare Hunt Collective is set to tour to the city we wrote MUNTED for… Christchurch, before Otago in September and Auckland in December.

MUNTED is edited together from interviews with reporters and the community. Three actresses present 15 peoples stories on stage within an hour long show. Their words are performed 100% verbatim from interviews, and we meet everyone from a 4 year old boy to a Grocer to a Cameraman covering the quake on TV. Stories of loss, peppered with humour and perspective on one of “our worst national tragedies” are told in direct speech. MUNTED finds laughter amongst grief and a strengthened community in the heart of the shaken city.

This is what TVNZ Journalist Matt Mclean had to say about MUNTED: “I truly believe MUNTED is a show as many New Zealanders as possible should see. This earthquake didn’t just affect the people of Christchurch…it affected us all. We all felt their grief, their stories. This play is phenomenal, and Bare Hunt’s almost sold-out Wellington season proves this is something we want to see” .

By donating money, you will be supporting local stories from an emerging theatre company who are flying to Christchurch from Wellington and Otago to stage MUNTED.

Who are the people you are supporting?

Bare Hunt Collective was co founded by Victoria Abbott and Jackie Shaw in 2010, both graduates of the Otago University Theatre department, where they studied Documentary Theatre together. Documentary theatre, and more specifically Verbatim dialogue connects with its audience in a unique way, the stories come from the community and are represented back for the community. Bare Hunt Collective uses this form to elevate NZ stories and storytellers to a theatrical level, while retaining the honest, down to earth delivery we gathered them in. Our aim is to activate our audiences by showing our world through a multitude of different eyes and viewpoints. It’s our hope that the work we do brings your stories and perspectives into the spoken.

Victoria Abbott

Performer/Head Writer of MUNTED- graduated from Toi Whakaari in November 2011. In her graduate show, Love’s Labour’s Lost she played alternately Don Adriano de Armado and Constable Dull. After graduating she worked with Nina Nawalowalo and Tom McCrory in The Conch production of Masi for the New Zealand International Arts Festival. Next up came The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later at BATS. Victoria has been recently working on Chekhov in Hell at Circa Theatre, and can now pull out some Russian should the need ever arise. Up next Victoria will be playing Barbara in Circa One's West End Girls and touring MUNTED to the South Island and Auckland.

Jackie Shaw

Performer/Producer of MUNTED - completed her Honours Degree in Theatre Studies at Otago University in 2008. This was followed by three years living in Wellington, where she was involved in various theatre productions. She now resides in Queenstown as a part time Speech and Drama Teacher. With Bare Hunt Collective she produced, co researched and performed in BACK/WORDS in 2010 and now MUNTED .She was honoured to receive the Deirdre Snedden Scholarship in 2011 which meant she was able to travel to New York City to attend a six week intensive at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, home of the Sanford Meisner Technique.

Frith Horan

Performer in MUNTED - Frith is currently in her second year of training at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School, highlights of which include playing Katherina in The Taming of the Shrew and Morag in David Greig’s Dunsinane. She has recently finished working on Toi’s site-specific devised piece, Aki, in collaboration with the National Library of New Zealand and the Archives New Zealand. Next up, Frith will be appearing in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Assassins and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at Toi Whakaari as well as touring MUNTED.

Katharine (Kate) McGill
Director of MUNTED – graduated from Toi Whakaari at the end of 2009. Since graduating, Kate has featured in films ‘Home By Christmas’ and ‘Separation City’. A proud New Zealander, Kate has created, performed and produced numerous works including ‘Vunderbra!’ ‘The Love of Your Life’ and directed award winning ‘A Love Tail' ‘BadJelly the Witch,’ ‘Bird Song’ 'Munted' and 'The Laramie Project:10 Years Later.' In 2010, Kate participated in the GALSCO Piknik Theatre Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and went on to an internship at the prestigious TECTONIC THEATER PROJECT, where she understudied one of the lead actresses and was offered a job at the end of the internship. Kate is about to be seen in the new comedy series 'Girl Vs Boy' and is looking forward to touring around NZ with 'Munted' and 'The Laramie Project:10 Years Later.' By donating money you will be supporting local stories from an emerging theatre company who are flying to Christchurch to stage MUNTED.
