A Brave New City is a public engagement project designed to re-engage the citizens of Christchurch in a positive way, with a view to creating a coherent vision of a future new city. The outcome will be a conversation which will create a listing of guiding principles designed to influence policy around community design, land use decision making and re-humanise the concept of a modern city.
We want to create a series of events that build upon each other and use the information gathered from the public to guide the building of the next event. That way it is always relevant and is moving in a purposeful direction.
I have decided to kick it off with the first of a series of community based public engagement events. It is loosely based on the Neighborhood Postcard Project (http://www.
I have created some postcards with speech bubbles to represent the peoples voice...and people fill in their hopes and dreams for the future of our city of Chrsitchurch.
My focus from day one with this project is not so much the buildings, as the land is usually privately owned/operated, but the spaces in between.
Thinking about how we want to feel in city (not just the CBD, we need to look at the city as a whole), how we want to move around, how & where we want to interact, what part does nature play in the city....
As part of A Brave New Citys campaign to gather peoples hopes and dreams for the future of the city of Christchurch, I am wanting to fund a series of plywood Postcards.
Each billboard will have a topical question, even relating to the location too if possible, and will encourage people to share their hopes and dreams in a public forum..and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
I already have aggreement on placement of billboards in the CBD on LIVS sites, in Lyttelton and just confirming to get them on UC campus as well.
So, any support you can give me to continue on creating a citizen built city would be very much appreciated,
Many thanks,
Michael

Hi all,
Some of you will be following A Brave New City on Facebook and/or twitter, but some of you may not..so, I thought I would take the chance to let you know that there are 2 articles appearing in the media this week detailing what A Brave New City is up to.
Tomorrow there is an article in The Press, written by Will Harvie, as the weekly piece on innovation. Also, later this week, Idealog will be publishing a piece online about what A Brave New City is about.
Keep your eyes peeled for those...a really good tool to recruit some support for the cause from colleagues ;)
Keep well,
Michael

Hey Everyone...just want to thank all those that have pledged so far...legends!!!!
I have organised a new reward for the more mega-plegder type folks out there...a custom piece of art created by the amazing Katitza (http://www.katitza.net/).
So for $500 pledge you can have this (it is yet to be finished...which will happen when someone chooses this option to support me :) )
To give you an idea of what it could kinda look like....
AMAZING!!!!
So...if you have already pledged, then please share this around...I need all the support I can get. The $1200 is the minimum I need to have some impact, but the more that is pledged then the more impact I can have to make this city full of inspired city makers.
Many thanks,
Michael
