New Movie Podcast

Project 2014-05-11 11:32:52 +1200

The co-hosts of the popular Cinematica podcast are making a fresh start. Cinematica was one of New Zealand’s most popular podcasts with hundreds of subscribers and over 140 episodes produced during a two and a half year run that ended in January 2014.

Cinematica co-hosts Dan Slevin and Kailey Carruthers are now producing a new show which will feature lots of regular and irregular special guests – reviewers, experts, knowitalls, filmmakers and industry insiders. It will be more like a chat show than a review show, even though movie reviews and opinions will feature heavily. Listeners will be encouraged to contribute and even take part in occasional "live" shows.

The new show will have permission to discuss more than just theatrical cinema releases and is giving itself the liberty of discussing home video, quality television, classics and pretty much anything else that falls into the category of narrative screen art. The show will release episodes weekly.

What do we need the money for? Even though both Kailey and Dan are giving their time each week without expectation of remuneration, putting a broadcast quality podcast together every week has costs. These include gear (the Cinematica studio including mixing desk, microphones, headphones, etc. belongs to someone else and is not available to this new venture), travel (for live events at the New Zealand Film Festival in Auckland for example) and hosting and web development as well as generating a brand, marketing and publicity.

Under normal circumstances, Dan would be funding this himself – and expects to continue to do so in an ongoing fashion – but he has had to write off $10,000 in unpaid ONFILM Magazine invoices this year and is not afraid to play that card if necessary.

“Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges.”

23/05/2014 at 3:40 PM

But we actually do. The lovely Sue Tyler has promised the first 100 pledgers on this campaign a special, limited edition, badge featuring the logo and website for this as-yet-unnamed new podcast venture. That means everyone who has pledged so far and another 63 pledgers yet to come forward.

Thanks Sue!

Cinematica - a clarification

15/05/2014 at 10:04 AM

The owner of the original Cinematica podcast and brand has asked us to point out that he has not finalised any plans regarding the further use of the name, brand or equipment. Cinematica, the name, may still live again.
