The Freebies Stewart Island Workshop

Project 2014-04-26 14:12:16 +1200

Dave Sheppard and The Freebies

A musical workshop and a free concert for the residents of Stewart Island. The workshop will take place on 7 June 11-1pm at the Community Hall. Those who take part in the workshop will have the option of performing in the evening concert by The Freebies (7-9pm).

Who we are

We are group of 11 professional, community minded musicians and support team who want to bring music to the residents of Stewart Island, and especially to  the students of the Stewart Island school. We are also taking  a film-maker, Dan de Laet, to film the project for the benefit of the sponsors. Dan is originally from Belgium, loves to travel and loves the outdoors, Kip Tapuna is the golden voiced guitar playing best kept secret in Invercargill. He plays for love not money but is the best around. Cody Pollard is the singing sensation of Invercargill. He recently won a recording contract by winning this years Karaoke final in Invercargill. Lisa Redhead is a talented singer/songwriter who has a soulful voice that has been honed to perfection by years of experience. Lisa is also great on keyboards.  Her husband Chris is our bass player and percussion player, a multi-talented musician. Stacey Sheppard is only 19 but has been recording her own songs since the age of 13, she is a talent to watch. Holger is our specialist guitarist from Germany, he also sings superbly, nice guy all round. Joey Sheppard is the youngest of The Freebies, 11 years old but she already has an impressive track record of singing, dancing and acting in major productions, an impressive percussionist as well. Dave Sheppard, the 'SilverFox' is the daddio of the Freebies. Loves to sing the Blues or any song that allows him to play his harmonica. Edna Sheppard and Julie Tapuna are the engine room of this project. They will take care of everything from food to accomodation to posting postcards to sponsors. They are the secret behind our success. That is our crew. 11 like-minded people who love bringing music to the people. We play blues, jazz, folk, country, pop in fact anything and everything that people enjoy and of course those who take part in the workshop can join us in concert and impress their friends and family and have a ball. It's going to be a great workshop and concert. There are some talented musos of all ages on Stewart Island and together with them we are going to create a magical evening of music, fun and togetherness  that will be remembered for a very  long time.

Why we need funding

We have received some funding to cover the ferry costs but we need to raise money to pay for accomodation and food. This is going to be a great project. We have received an enthusiastic response from the Stewart Island school the Toi Rakiaura Trust and many other Stewart Island residents that  have learned about the project.
