ADVENTURES IN TEA TIME

Project 2014-03-31 12:34:01 +1300

A picture book for children, babies, and the people who read to them aloud.

Patti and Kitta are Chartreux kitten cousins ready for tea time adventures. Their world is full of dreamy escapades and lovable characters. This book is written and hand illustrated by the singular human of PLEASANT FOLK. Pencil and watercolour, along with actual tea, are the materials used. It is an ongoing series formatted like a simple comic for small children ages 0-7+.

Patti and Kitta live with Granma in a cozy stone cottage. They have a spunky kitten-sitter, Nell. Most of Patti and Kitta’s imaginative adventures take place after school during ‘tea time’. Every now and then you might spot their stuffed toys Pilly the Pillow and Beljo the Beluga Whale. The first book follows the kittens as they build a fort in the living room under the watchful eye of Nell. Suddenly they are transported to a travelling show! Will Patti and Kitta survive the performance?

Why support an indie picture book?

Many commercial publishers randomly pair separate writers and illustrators who have never even met each other. The collaborative process does not exist and publishers discourage singular author/illustrator submissions. Many illustrators use expensive software programs and technology to create images quickly. Please support a laborous work of art by a self-taught illustrator. Help independently publish this original kiddie comic series.

Personal Note...

This book has taken me over six months to make and is my largest effort artistically to date. I have redrawn the entire book several times to get the composition just right. PLEASANT FOLK came about from the lack of consistent employment in New Zealand. It has been difficult as a student to focus on my work when there are so little prospects. I took matters into my own little hands. I started growing project seedlings to support myself. But, at this point Patti and Kitta have cost me money. I want to make a living from my skills because that's what a useful human does. Proper funding will help finally launch the book and get it under the eyeballs of kids! They know what they like and I hope to get their feedback. Hopefully this will provide them with a series that's different, funny and yummy.

FUNDING BREAKDOWN

The goal may seem high but here is a breakdown of the process.

I will be printing the paperback book with matte pages to maintain the quirky imperfections of handmade illustrations. It will also blend the comic book and children's book format. As a former nanny I know that matte children's books take a beating! But the quality of the paper will help this book last. Printing and binding the book will be the most expensive aspect of the whole project. I am seeking a small batch the first time around of about 25-45 books. Blurb.com is a potential option but I hope to find a local printer first to support made in NZ.

While I aim to use a computer as little as possible it is 2014. I even hesitated to use social media like crowd funding! I do not own a computer or scanner so digitizing my images has been very difficult. I am lucky that I own a little point and shoot digital camera. A personal computer or scanner keeps the process more in house so I can maintain control and creativity. I have to add the text on the computer at this point. My attempt at handwriting the book was a mess! Still working on typography skills. Otherwise these funds will be used to pay for the service from an outside company.

Supplies are expensive though I try to keep costs down by using earth freindly companies or low cost materials. Providing the printers with my own paper can actually keep costs down in the long run. It also ensures the book is made with the best products. I won't have to settle with the small selections that are often available at printers. Additionally, tea, watercolours, pens, etc. are always running out!

Promotion for this book has been old fashioned and I hoped to keep it that way. Up until now I was walking around the city showing vendors my illustrations. I was sending letters and emails all over the world. Travelling to public libraries for story hour or birthday parties for meet and greets is a goal of mine. I would love to have these books for sale in florists, boutiques and specialty book stores. This means delivering my products and conducting business in person. I have never been a vendor at a craft fair because I could never afford the costs. They are so valuable in so many ways but have always been out of reach for PLEASANT FOLK. Craft fair fees and supplies such as table cloths, table rentals, business cards, and display modules are needed.

Studio space is hard to come by when living in a motel or hostel. I have already rented a nice desk from a nice group of artists but could not afford to stay for very long. Ensuring that I have desk space is crucial (over 50 individual painted pages to spread out and finish).

Art and book consultation is something I am seeking because I am self taught. In seeking the advice of a more senior artist or author I can help myself work through certain problems. I want my intentions to come through on the page. I want this book to be a shining example of indie effort.

Art prints are a great way for readers to expand the world of the book. They help with promotion as well. Having art prints made can be costly with much trial and error. I was able to make a few tests but many of them are still flawed. Bigger batches of prints at a high quality will be a great addition to the world of AITT.
