The travelling translator of science needs funds to take flight to Brazil! The masters is done, and the conference fee is paid. I just have to get there.

After two full years of study at the Science Communication Centre at Otago, an amazing opportuntiy has knocked on my door. My academic research has been selected for presentation at the 13th Public Communication of Science and Technology in Bahia, Brazil.

The paper I will be presenting is called 'Commercialsing Conservation: selling out or increasing efficiency?'

Beacuse it’s no secret that we’re failing at conservation. We’re losing species and habitats so fast that 30% of the worlds’ species are considered to be ‘walking dead’. The communication breakdown between scientists, conservation practitioners, and policy makers is a root cause of this failing.

What if a solution lay where many see a problem? Commercial strategies could enhance communication, improve efficiency, and give conservation a much-needed boost. By translating the benefits of biodiversity into a commercial language we could ensure that the value of conservation is effectively communicated to those with the power to make a difference at the very highest levels.

THE DOLLARS
I've paid the three hundred dollar entry fee to the PCST conference, but the flights, accomodation, and expenses work out at five thousand. This is where the money will go. I'm seeking $3200, as I've applied for additional funding from the New Zealand Federation for Graduate Women and the Zoology department at Otago University.

If I manage to raise more than five thousand dollars, that money will go towards a professional camera so I can shoot a documentary that I've been asked to make in November 2014.
