About

These Girls Are No Cream Puffs! Kiwis Take On The Pastry World

Project 2014-03-16 17:08:48 +1300

Ms Jiemin Aw, a young pastry chef from New Zealand, has won the right to compete in Norway in the Global Pastry Chefs Challenge in Stavanger, Norway 2-6 July 2014.  This event is part of the World Chefs Association bi-ennial Congress. She competed successfully at the Pacific Rim semi finals in Perth late last year and won the place to represent not only New Zealand but the Pacific Rim as a whole.  The purpose of this project is to raise awareness and funds to enable her and her commis chef Sarah Harrap to attend and compete on the world stage.

Jiemin Aw - Chocolate Showpiece

We have set a funding goal of $5485 to cover her airfares and excess baggage allowance so that she can take her all important culinary equipment with her.

The New Zealand Chefs Association is a not for profit organisation set up to encourage and foster interest in the culinary arts and sciences and promote and advance the interests of chefs, cooks, patissiers and confectioners to protect and develop a high standard of performance in their professions.

Looks like Jiemin is going to Norway with Sarah at her side! Wow thanks so much to you all, especially those who have pledged, tweeted, shared, and liked our fabulous Pastry Girls.
The support and praise for these young woman has been tremendous and I look forward to travelling with them as our NZ Chefs Association Ambassadors and watching them first hand taking on the Global Pastry World.
Please keep a track of their achievements on our facebook page as the World Congress starts on the 2nd of July with the prize giving 5th July 2014 hopefully Jiemin will be able to lift the title and the trophy.
Kind Regards and happy cooking

I meant it when I captioned this clip, "these girls are certainly no cream puffs”.

We are very proud of these young women. Jiemin epitomises dedication to her craft and is a bundle of wonderful supercharged energy. For me it is no mistake that she won the right to represent the Pacific Region, at the finals in Perth, as she absolutely puts every ounce she has of her passion into her work and is extremely focused on the technical aspects required, while she does not lose sight of the art needed to inspire. Her choice in Sarah, as her commis, is rock solid. Sarah is also an extremely disciplined and driven young practitioner who has a tremendous work rate and never complains! Together they will make an awesome team, certainly Kiwis not to be tangled with over a pastry brush.

I am delighted that Sarah will also have the opportunity to represent New Zealand as our Billy Gallagher young chefs forum member, and believe emphatically that she will make friends for life from this experience. NZ Chefs and the NZ Pastry and Cookery industry is blessed to have this pairing represent us in such a professional way, and I wish to thank our "pledgers" for their generous support, as this allows us to be a step closer to taking on the World Chefs Global Pastry Giants, personally I can't wait to travel with you to Norway ladies.

Regards Anita Sarginson

National President NZ Chefs Association.

The Chocolate is ready Chef!

My stealth mission on Saturday to see the girls practice certainly paid off! I arrive just in time to see two rather large bowls of chocolate get moulded, piped, shaped, sprayed and attached to their masterpiece. The spray booth was all set up and there was not a gypsy in sight needing a tan! More importantly there were more silicone moulds than the Weta workshop and although the over-all piece is still under wraps, just like a secret Hollywood marriage, I can tell you it’s got the legs to go all the way to Norway!

Our Pledge me campaign is in its final weeks and the NZ Chefs Association has to say a huge thank you to everybody who has tweeted, or Facebooked our PledgeMe link and a chocolate kisses to all of you who have pledged funds. Only a little bit more to go and Jiemin will be funded so please if you haven’t pledged yet, or sent our link around your network please now is the time to do it.

Regards Anita S
