Fruit, Nut & Native Trees For Oamaru & Waitaki District: A Food Forest

Vision

The goal of this project is to raise funds for 100 fruit, nut and native trees to be planted in Oamaru, Duntroon, and other village areas in the Waitaki District. Every $10 donation pays for 1 tree. 

Background

Fresh fruits & nuts can be a vital source of vitamins and protein in a healthy diet for people of all ages. More than 50% of Oamaru residents earn less than $20,000 per year (2013 Census), so many working families do not have the financial resources to provide sufficient fresh fruit & nuts for their families. Only about 25% of New Zealand's original native forests still stand today. By planting fruit, nut and native trees we can help feed our community for generations to come and re-establish native trees in our community. 

The Rattling Rocks Music Festival in Duntroon launched the Oamaru Food Forest Project on March 15th, 2014. Twenty-two native trees and a walnut were planted at the Duntroon Domain by musicians, volunteers, and festival-goers.
