About

Urban Kai - Kai Cycle

Project 2014-02-16 19:21:11 +1300

Urban Kai aims to be Wellington's first closed loop food system.

VISION

Our vision is a vibrant urban food economy in Wellington, where  people are educated about how to grow their own food and are connected to their food supply.

MISSION

Our mission is to create an urban food system in Wellington which provides a transparent and accessible way for people to see and be involved in composting and food production. We are creating an urban farm in Wellington, supplying local produce to cafes, restaurants and the wider community, while also providing educational opportunities through farm tours, schools visits and workshops. Urban Kai will provide a completely transparent and accessible way to see and be involved in local food production. All profits from Urban Kai will go to fund the work of the Local Food Network.

WHY PLEDGEME?

The first step to our system is Waste Minimisation. Diverting organic matter from going into the landfill through a composting service called Kai Cycle. This system will engage the community and utilise resources available in Wellington.

We will start off by collecting food scraps from a few residents and small business's. They will be given a clean, empty bucket that will be swapped out each week.  Next, their food scraps will be turned into nutrient dense compost that will then contribute to the local growing of fresh, organic, produce!

In order to get this up and running we need to raise money to cover the setup costs:
Bicycle trailers, compost buckets, building our compost system and to cover maintence fees.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Urban Kai's closed loop food system will cost about $15,000 to get off the ground. We are building it organically and would like the community to be part of the growth.  Stay tuned for updates and how to be part of the story. Please like us on Facebook
