Ice Blacks Documentary

Project 2014-02-03 14:35:20 +1300

UPDATE: To all the people who 'like' this project, please think about pledging $5. If everybody who 'liked' it so far had chipped in $5, then we would be very close to raising the amount we need and sharing this story with you and the world.

--

In 2011 I followed the New Zealand men's ice hockey team to the world championships. Their achievement, against all the odds, was the greatest ever by a New Zealand men's ice hockey team and I got it all on film.

Since that time I have tried every funding body imaginable as well as numerous broadcasters both in New Zealand and overseas. All agree it's a great story and they would happily air it, but that it falls outside their parameters for funding.

Now after two years of trying to get it made, I turn to you. If there's enough desire out there, we will make this happen together and present the finished program to the Ice Blacks before they travel to Spain for this year's world championships in April.

--

I've made plenty of documentary content for broadcasters all around the world, having worked for TV3, Maori TV and Al Jazeera, but this story is one I feel needs to be told.

I want all Kiwi's to take pride in their teams achievements and understand that the only amateur team in a division full of professionals walked away as equals.

I don't want this piece of New Zealand sporting history to slip into the ether. This story has so many highs and lows, from North Korea and administrative interference to victories over nations we'd never beaten before. It should be shared, remembered and celebrated.

If it's a story you want to see, please pledge and spread the word. Even if you can't donate, just sharing this page goes a long way to helping us reach our goal and getting more people in behind the Ice Blacks.

The film is finished

08/04/2016 at 2:24 PM

The film is finally finished and can be viewed here from today https://vimeo.com/ondemand/iceblacks

Thank you all so much for your support in making this project happen and for your patience while we worked through so many barriers to make the film happen.

We are proud of the final result and hope you enjoy it. Remember to share it far and wide so as many as people as possible see it.

Thank you all.

USB/DVD's

24/03/2016 at 3:34 AM

We had to make a hard decision today not to honour our promise of sending out USB's and DVD's of the film. We've long since run out of money and have decided to spend the sum we had set aside for the physical copies and postage on the sound mix instead.

The sound mix is very important to the enjoyment and watchability of the film, it's simply too important for us not to have done professionally.

In lieu of the USB's/DVD's we will be offering a digital download. The internet has improved a lot in the recent past and we don't think downloading the film as opposed to getting it in the post will really effect anyone, you'll actually be getting it faster.

If there's anyone out there this decision does effect, please email us back to let us know you want a physical copy and why. We will do our best to help you out.

You can continue to follow more regular updates and our progress on our blog, here http://iceblacksdoco.blogspot.co.nz/

If you missed the annoucement the other day, we are now confident of finishing the film in one form or another for you to view prior to the Ice Blacks starting their tournament in Mexico on April 9.

We are still urgently looking for historial photos and videos of the Ice Blacks, particularly from the 80's and 90's, so if you have these or know someone who does, please contact us immediately.

The film will be greatly improved by this content and we look forward to sharing the film with you all.

To show our ongoing gratitude to our documentary sponsors and donors, we will be streaming tonight's Ice Blacks game against the NZIHL Champion Southern Stampede free of charge.

We've also supplied hand flags for our smallest fans.

We need old photos of the Ice Blacks

07/02/2015 at 9:36 PM

Recently we were excited to bring you coverage of the IIHF U20 World Championship Division 3 from Dunedin. The coverage was really well received around the world and we were able to add some exciting extras in the form of more cameras and instant replays.

If you missed any of the coverage, you can watch all the game at www.nzihl.tv or have a look at some highlights from our youtube channel. One clip of the team performing the haka went viral and appeared all around the world on TSN, BBC, ESPN and many other news outlets.

Now we're cracking on again with the Ice Blacks documentary in the hope that the current team can sit down and watch it before they fly out for South Africa.

It has been an awful lot of work, but it isn't quite done.

We're putting the call out to our supporters to help us find old photographs of the Ice Blacks in action around the world and of any old pictures of ice hockey being played in New Zealand way back before the Ice Blacks ever existed.

If you can help us, or know of someone who might have these prized pictures, please email [email protected] tweet us @slapshotnz - the more we can find, the better the documentary will be.

Rescripting rescripting rescripting

02/12/2014 at 4:58 PM

We have been rescripting the Ice Blacks documentary after picking up some extra interviews and footage in Queenstown last month at the Ice Blacks training camp. A huge thanks to Dave Dubnick for working so hard with us on recording some supplemental commentary of the matches from 2011.

We sent Skate Of Origin jerseys with their names on them to our wonderful sponsors to thank them for their continued patience, so big thanks again to Big Ears Llama Ranch, Tri-Star International and Queenstown Ice Arena.

Queenstown asked that theirs commemorate a family which has given so much to the game in New Zealand and very nicely hung it in their main cabinet for all to see.

This documentary continues to present an array of new challenges, but we're working through them and are excited by the sequences we're starting to see come together.

Hard Yakka

27/09/2014 at 3:33 PM

We've been putting in a lot of long hours on the Ice Blacks documentary and I thank you for your continued patience. It's been hard yakka and really tough reworking the narrative (basically coming at the story from a different angle).

One thing the new documentary needs is lots of old photos of the Ice Blacks dating back to 1987. If you or someone you know have access to such photographs and would be willing to allow us to use them in the documentary, we would love to hear from you.

Ice Blacks Update

08/06/2014 at 9:01 PM

Hi everyone! Things have been a bit slow on the Ice Blacks documentary front because we've been so busy putting together the live stream for the NZIHL season.

However now that we're under way we can put more time back into the doco and make sure we get it to you before the end of the NZIHL season.

One thing is for sure, we're not going to rush it, much better to get it right and do the best possible job we can do.

Speaking of which, we just set an all time viewership record for the NZIHL with the first game of the season! Thanks to everyone for tuning in.

You can watch the game here https://new.livestream.com/nzihl/g02

Congratulations to the Ice Blacks and Ice Fernz

19/04/2014 at 7:55 PM

We hope you all enjoyed following the Ice Blacks and Ice Fernz at the World Champs this year as much as I did.

I kept the NZIHL website as updated as best I could, so if you missed anything, just head there and read back few a through stories, look at photos and read up on some stats.

www.nzihl.com

Quite a few pressing NZIHL bits and pieces have come up in the last couple of weeks, so I've been working hard to knock those on the head before getting stuck back into the doco so that everyone else can carry on getting ready without having to wait for me. It's looking really good!

Just look at these 10th season logos created by Shane. Lots to celebrate and enjoy this year.

Post Pledge Drive Update #1

26/03/2014 at 2:40 PM

Hiya, just an update from our end, we're really enjoying Hawaii..

No no, we've been hard at work getting lots of the logistics out of the way. Like these martinis!

No, seriously, it's been a slog, but we'll keep you updated as we make progress and may even upload some little teasers as time goes by.

Initially we'd wanted to finish a rough cut of the documentary to show the team before they left for Europe, but it became apparent we just weren't going to have time and seeing as they've already left, we're going to take even longer.

Not because we're lazy, but because we want to get it right.

Please follow and support the Ice Blacks and Ice Fernz at their World Championship events this year, all the details can be found here http://www.nzihl.com/?p=1103

Here's the first video update from the team https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=477862068980921

We made it! You are so awesome!

14/03/2014 at 5:09 PM

Thank you all so much! I cannot describe the relief with getting this over the line.

If I'm honest, I haven't slept well this week. I've contacted everyone under the Sun and with your help we reached well over 1000 likes on Facebook, 251 Tweets on Twitter, 132 pledges and raised $6465.

This means an initial run of 100 DVD's, 50 Flags and 4 special premiere parties around the country!

Special mention must go to Ian Challis, Tristar International, Queenstown Ice Arena and Big Ears Llama Ranch for their very generous support. Please support them and their businesses as they support hockey.

Another special mention must go to all those who spread the word tirelessly, reminding everyone out there of what we were trying to do and the story we are trying to tell. Without you this would never have happened.

There's a lot of work in front of me now, but thanks to all of you, we will bring the Ice Blacks story to television and to the world.

Thank you so much for believing in me. I really am so touched by your sharing, your pledges and your kind words.

Jez

Welcome our fourth sponsor!

14/03/2014 at 5:01 PM

Huge huge thanks to Keith at Big Ears Llama Ranch for coming on board as our fourth sponsor!

Keith breeds and trains llamas as pack animals to take out for high country camping, hunting and fishing trips.

You should get in touch with Keith and plan a unique experience, it sounds like you'll also get to talk hockey!

1000 likes!

13/03/2014 at 10:14 PM

A lot of people clearly want to see this project get off the ground, we've had over 1000 likes on Facebook and that is an epic amount of support.

We have less than a day now to make our target and $1240 still to get as I write this. If we can make it, it looks like I'm going to be flush out of Ice Blacks flags and 64 people have preordered the DVD, that's amazing, thank you.

I tried to put together a little highlights reel to music, but there's just SO much vision from the trip that I never would have gotten it done in time to post before the campaign is over.

Fingers crossed we get the last of the money we need and rather than a little highlights clip, you get the whole documentary.

Thanks Tristar International

12/03/2014 at 3:34 PM

We have our third sponsor! Tristar International have come on board to support the documentary and support the team. Thank you so much, but where will you have your premiere screening?

You should consider Tristar for your logistic solutions because they are obviously awesome

Ice Blacks Photoshoot

11/03/2014 at 11:03 PM

While in Auckland this past weekend to film the final interviews for the documentary, we also organised a photoshoot for the DVD covers. Check out Nick Craig in this great shot from Xavier Wallach.

The next time you need pictures taken, get in touch with Xavier, the man is a genius.

Thank you Queenstown Ice Arena

11/03/2014 at 2:58 PM

The Queenstown Ice Arena has just come on board as our second sponsor! Thank you so much for your support and being an awesome place to skate and play hockey.

9 days to go and we're 1/4 of the way there

06/03/2014 at 12:21 AM

Well done everyone, we're fully a quarter of the way to our goal with 9 days left to go. Keep spreading the word!

Thank you international friends!

05/03/2014 at 4:09 PM

Thanks very much to the International Ice Hockey Federation and all the international people who have gotten behind this project. Thank you so much for pledging and continuing to spread the word around the world.

We hope you enjoy the story.IIHF Logo

Falling behind a little, so let's sex it up

03/03/2014 at 2:56 AM

This is for you ladies.

Day 2

02/03/2014 at 1:31 AM

Awesome day 2! We've got the difference down under $5000 and we have our first sponsor on board! Welcome friend.

We have a truckload of facebook likes, 431 at last count, that's a lot of people who want to see this project come to fruition.

If each of those people give $5, that's $2155! So ask your friends if they've pledged or if they plan to, because if they like the link, but don't pony up the dough, then it won't happen.

Also if you're a potential sponsor and you're sitting there wondering if this is a good move for you, get in touch, I will be frank and honest about what you can expect from being involved.

Great start!

28/02/2014 at 5:51 PM

We're off to great start here on day 1! We need to average about $400-450 a day in order to make our target so keep sharing this page.

We've had 250 likes in our first few hours, if each of those people donates $5, that's $1200! So remember, your donation, no matter how small, adds up big time!

Also if your Mum or Dad own a large multinational corporation and want to throw money at us, that's cool too.

We have our third sponsor! Tristar International have come on board to support the documentary and support the team. Thank you so much, but where will you have your premiere screening?

You should consider Tristar for your logistic solutions because they are obviously awesome

While in Auckland this past weekend to film the final interviews for the documentary, we also organised a photoshoot for the DVD covers. Check out Nick Craig in this great shot from Xavier Wallach.

The next time you need pictures taken, get in touch with Xavier, the man is a genius.

9 days to go and we're 1/4 of the way there

    06/03/2014 at 12:21 AM

Well done everyone, we're fully a quarter of the way to our goal with 9 days left to go. Keep spreading the word!

    Thank you international friends!

Thanks very much to the International Ice Hockey Federation and all the international people who have gotten behind this project. Thank you so much for pledging and continuing to spread the word around the world.
