Speed dating with a twist aiming to inspire young Porirua writers

Budding young New Zealand writers take the fast lane to top creative talent when they get to “speed date” a room of authors. Students taking part in the New Zealand Book Council’s Speed Date an Author events get the benefit of years of accumulated writing experience over the course of a morning.

Six of New Zealand’s top writers each deliver quickfire creative coaching to 50 children per session. The mentoring writers help the students hone their creative skills in generating ideas, constructing plot, developing character, creating atmosphere and playing with words in their twenty minute sessions with the children. The purpose of the programme is to show that writing can be fun, powerful and mastered by anyone.

Speed Date an Author is one of the Book Council’s most in-demand workshops for budding writers and readers. So far over 300 students have been inspired by the energetic and fun format:  ‘I really enjoyed the day. What I loved was that I learnt a lot there and it was very fun. A lowlight was when it all finished.’ – Comment by an Auckland Speed Date participant

We need your help to deliver a Speed Date an Author workshop in October 2012 in Porirua. $3815 will enable us to cover all the costs involved and ensure that all students can attend for free.  We have a strong demand from local schools for Speed Date an Author, following our successful pilot in Wellington, and fully-booked events in Hawera, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Auckland. All we need now is your pledge to enable 60 local junior high school students from across Porirua to take inspiration from six brilliant mentor writers, including Kate De Goldi, Mandy Hager and Karlo Mila.

Porirua has a thriving artistic scene, and is home to a host of successful and inspiring writers and artists. We wish to support this creative community and enable students from low-decile schools in the area to build their confidence and skills as writers and storytellers. Please make your pledge today and help us to fire up the imaginations of New Zealand’s next generation of writers and storytellers.
