Collab Project with Loading Docs

LOADING DOCS is a trailblazing new initiative co-funded by The New Zealand Film Commission and NZ On Air, and managed by production company Notable Pictures to fund, create and distribute innovative New Zealand documentary shorts.

Hi there!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my page.

Dans is a personal project that I've wanted to make for some years now. It is based on the many stories my grandfather Sol has told me. The tricky part is I need some help from you to fund the film.

As a part of the Loading Docs initiative I need to raise a minimum of $2000.  This will help cover sound recording, music and some bare bones animation time. Any money I raise above this amount will allow me to hire some helping hands with the animation and fund the composition of a unique score by, hopefully, one of today’s more exciting musicians.

I'd really appreciate your help in seeing this come to life.

- Joel

Dans is a sprawling animated documentary based around the storytelling of Sol, an elderly Turkish migrant now living in New Zealand. In this colourful short Sol recounts a treasured memory from his early days as a refugee spent at “The Orange” - a popular dance hall in Auckland.

Joel is a local director, with a background in painting, animation and design. He was co-founder of creative studio Special Problems and is currently represented by The Sweet Shop for commercial projects.  Joel's work includes music videos for Lorde, The Naked and Famous, Flying Lotus, Zowie, David Dallas, The Mint Chicks and Flight of the Conchords.   Joel also co-wrote and co- directed Echoes, a short film produced by The Weinstein Company, which recently won Best Short Film Script at the New Zealand Film Awards.
