About

Moo-Lah For Hungry Cows ... And Pigs, Sheep, Horses, And Goats!

Project 2014-01-20 13:03:35 +1300

Beautiful sheep, goats and pigs!

Although the sun is shining now, winter is coming! The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary is fundraising for very much needed stocks of feed so the animals don't go hungry! In the colder months, the grass stops growing, and so the cows, sheep, horses, pigs and goats all need extra hay, grain, and pellets to keep them healthy, happy, and kicking up their heels! In particular Peanut our elderly horse (aged 30) has few teeth and needs a generous supply of additional feed all year round, and the cows chow through an enormous pile of feed. Although we have wonderful help from our awesome donors and sponsors, this only goes a small way towards covering costs. Summer is the best time to build up our stocks as feed is cheaper.

We need around $3000 to buy in grain, hay, pellets and other essential feeds! Can you help us to make hay while the sun shines, and ensure the cows, sheep and horses are happy and well-fed this winter? We are a registered charity so all donations are tax deductible!

To give you some background, Black Sheep rehabilitates and re-homes abused, injured, and neglected non-human animals. We support animal rights and animal protection, and our main aim is to provide a safe haven for animals. Right now three full-time caretakers, with support from dedicated part-time volunteers and WWOOFers care for around a hundred and fifty animals (pigs, goats, sheep, roosters, geese, cows, horses, dogs, cats, ducks, hedgehogs, magpies etc.) at Otaki Forks, an hour's drive north of Wellington.

Our particular focus is to take in neglected, mistreated, and abandoned farm animals. We offer a refuge where they can live out their natural lives in peace and security, in the company of others of their kind. Where possible we rehome to loving forever homes, but there are many animals with special needs who are permanently with us. We're run by the Animal Protection Society, a registered charity, and we're hoping for your help to buy much needed animal feed! Peanut, Thunder, Sirius, Poppy, Iris, Gypsy, Hazel, Struan, Jacob, Bartholomew, Kale, Klapansi, Mossbeard and the others will be so happy!

Thank you working bee volunteers!

09/03/2014 at 1:13 PM

Thank you to all the wonderful working bee volunteers who helped out yesterday at the Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary Otaki. We had a productive day, planting flax, putting in posts, cuddling animals and of course picking up manure! Pi the friendly rescued magpie was very interested in everything we were doing, and in particular in Hannah's pink gumboots! Although the weather didn't look great to begin with, we had a lovely sunny afternoon in the end. Thank you so much everyone!

Thank you!

Thank you so much everyone who has donated or spread the word! We've just managed to achieve the fundraising target, which is fantastic, we're so grateful for everyone's generosity. It's so good to know that we can get on with buying feed at a good price and the animals will have plenty to eat this winter.

Many thanks again on behalf of the animals! So as soon as the project officially closes we can get on with sending out vegan chocolates etc as the rewards :-)

Some kind people did a stall today in Cuba Mall, raising money for the Black Sheep's Pledge Me campaign! Thanks so much also to Anna who donated beautiful organic lemon verbena, pineapple sage, jade, and house plants as a fundraiser. If you missed out, these will be available at Opportunity for Animals Newtown from tomorrow.
