Collab Project with Loading Docs

LOADING DOCS is a trailblazing new initiative co-funded by The New Zealand Film Commission and NZ On Air, and managed by production company Notable Pictures to fund, create and distribute innovative New Zealand documentary shorts.

"The Road to Whakarae" is part of the LOADING DOCS initiative.

Filmmakers Tim Worrall and Aaron Smart intend to make a short documentary that speaks to the mana of their iwi, Ngai Tūhoe, in a lighthearted and joyful way through the performance of an old Waimana party song "Te Rori ki Whakarae" - "The Road to Whakarae".  Their plan is to film whanau who live on the dusty, winding road to Whakarae as they each sing a different part of the waiata.

The lyrics of “Te Rori ki Whakarae, e” tell how the unsealed road is a crucial part of Whakarae’s mana that could be lost if it were to be sealed and straightened.  Echoing the words of the song, the filmed performances will honour the simple lifestyle and closeness of whanau who have stayed on Tūhoe's traditional lands to keep the home fires burning for the rest of the iwi.

Tim Worrall

I am from Ngai Tūhoe and am currently a chairman of Tauanui Marae.  I have been an independant artist all my adult life working in ta moko, graphics, carving, design and painting.  In the last ten years I have concentrated on film and television and have written and directed drama, comedy and documentaries for all our major broadcasting networks.   I currently have a dramatic short film in pre-production and a feature film script in development.  My dream is to continue making films with and about my tribe that are uplifting and entertaining.  I am married to Taria Tahana with whom I have two sons - Tiki and Tanu.

Aaron Smart

Aaron Smart is an independent video producer, director, camera operator and editor. Since gaining a diploma in film production Aaron has worked as an editor for a top rating television show and has produced a variety of short films and promos for corporate clients and charity organisations.

His goal is to make films that inspire, entertain and hopefully change audience perceptions. Aaron runs Smart As Productions based in the sunny Bay of Plenty where he lives with his wife Jody and their two kids Nirai and Lola.
