Educated In San Francisco

Project 2014-01-05 11:51:57 +1300

I have been invited to study as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Whilst I remain a PhD student at Victoria University here in Wellington, the invitation to UCSF offers the chance to be instructed by some of the leading academics in my research field of Nursing and Sociology.

My doctoral research encompasses how ethical frameworks inform decision-making during prenatal screening for Down syndrome (DS). Inspired by my personal experience, I am interested in conceptualising how varying ethical themes interact with the decisions pregnant women make when offered screening for DS. The aim of my research is to reveal a greater understanding into the role of ethics and values in personal, healthcare decisions.

This trip consists of a 3-month Visiting Scholar appointment at UCSF, from March-June 2014. I will take a single-term paper at the School of Nursing & Sociology, entitled Sociology of Science & Technology, to deeply engage in the significance of social forces in scientific work and the construction of scientific knowledge.

My fundraising goal includes 1/2 the tuition for 1 term at UCSF. Please help me make this academic opportunity a reality!
