Empty City - NYT Summer Show
Project 2013-12-23 15:32:06 +1300
The NYT summer show is an exponential event about activating local spaces, engaging with Northland’s young people as theatre-makers and audience members, and creating theatre that is specific to our place. A fragile and exuberant expression of what it is to be a young person of Whangarei in our time. Follow our progress on tumblr here.
Once again we will devise a site specific theatrical event made specifically for the people of Whangarei and the world, created by our talented and eclectic cast of young northlanders. Last year’s summer show “Odyssey” became such a hit it has just performed in Aotea Square in Auckland and is due for another production in Hamilton – Thanks to all of you who supported us last year! Check out our "Odyssey" trailer here!
What is a city without its children? Welcome to your city. The dirt, the joy, the rust, the car parks, the late fast food runs, the graffiti, the shadow of Parihaka and the sweep of the Hatea.
This summer NYT’s expansive summer cast will breathe life into the old Recycling Centre on Pohe Island as we lead you through your own streets as they are and as they were, while weaving through an ancient tale of a city who broke a promise. A prophetic cartographer will be our guide. The boy who was left behind. The boy in the shadow of the mountain. There will be singing, swinging, playing and scribbling, a city swarming with rats and a stranger who comes to town. Follow us…you might never come back!
Feel what it’s like to be left behind.
Come hide in the mountain.
What is a city without its children?
To mount the show we need around $20,000. We're well on the way to reaching our goal but we need your help! We are hoping to raise $3500 towards our props, set and costume budget!
We are supported by an ever-growing band of individuals and organisations, with an aim that our work engages as much of our local community as we can in the making of the show. Help us ignite wonder. Be part of the explosion!
