Keyboard Athletes

Project 2012-04-18 05:58:08 +1200

The clattering of keystrokes and joysticks echoing into the distance, beads of sweat running down their faces, eyes strained, hours of training all for this one moment. Crowds gather around the players and watch anxiously, some covering their eyes while others scream loudly as history is about to be written. Managers and organisers watch from a distance, all the time, money and their reputations on the line for this one event. This is the world of competitive gaming also known as eSports.

‘Keyboard Athletes’ is a feature length documentary that will take you into the world of the growing eSports industry in New Zealand throughout the year of 2012. The primary focus will be on three key aspects; the players, the fans and the organisers, giving you their perspective as the industry changes. You will witness their triumphs, their failures, their sacrifices, their highs and their lows and get a rare glimpse into a world not many know even exists.

We have already started filming and put together a few teaser videos with the footage we have obtained so far but we cannot finish this project without funding.  At the moment we are very low budget but with the help of your generous pledges we will be able to get the last equipment that we need to continue filming and deliver a very high quality final product. The pledges will also finance our travel costs so we can cover all of the major gaming events around New Zealand.

Our long term goals for this documentary are to enter ‘Keyboard Athletes’ to film festivals both in New Zealand and around the world including Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and the Auckland and Wellington international Film Festivals. We want to bring exposure to the New Zealand eSports community which although small in comparison to the rest of the world is very passionate and talented.
