About the Club
The University of Canterbury Musical Theatre Society Inc - MUSOC - is a charitable organisation. Our only goal is to put theatrical performances throughout the year - to entertain, to grow and to develop talent, and through doing this we hope our members have a great time.
We’re a not-for-profit incorporated society, affiliated to the University of Canterbury Students’ Association. MUSOC has been around since 1969 and has been producing musical theatre since 1972.
MUSOC encourages people to try out all aspects of theatre from performing on stage to helping out backstage by doing things such as costumes, props and stage managing.
We also encourage people to direct, produce and take part in any aspect of musical theatre including writing and staging their own musicals. MUSOC has a proud history of performing original musicals written by locals, not to mention critically acclaimed international shows.
Producing a show takes a lot of time and effort - all which goes unpaid for those involved. Your donation goes directly towards funding the show, whether it be lights, staging, costumes, props, or any of the factors that are involved in producing a great MUSOC show.
With your donation, we’re able to keep putting on shows for ours, the local community’s and your enjoyment.
Donationg towards a MUSOC show is a great way of supporting your local community, getting behind local student talent, and advertising your brand in front of thousands of people.
Show Overview
It's “opening night” for MUSOC's latest upcoming Broadway smash! Mel Brooks' great musical, The Producers, proudly brought to you by Kiwibank.
Based on Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, The Producers follows worrisome accountant, Leo Bloom alongside down and out Broadway Producer, Max Bialystock. A commercial roller- coaster ride awaits the pair as they explore all the intrigues, pleasures and absurdities that lace the perilous path towards fame and fortune in the great game of Broadway show business.
But the couple have a plan to change the game to their liking: put on the worst, most contemptible show New York has ever seen, and make off with the two million dollars raised. To do this, they seek out eccentric ex-Nazi, Franz Liebkind, who provides them with "Springtime for Hitler", the worst play ever written.
The would-be producers are also joined by Ulla, a beautiful, blonde Swedish bombshell, eager to 'flaunt-it' in their upcoming catastrophe. Homosexuality, Nazidom, and Show Biz: all and more are made light of and turned upside-down along the journey of Leo and Max in their pursuit of becoming the 'Kings of Broadway'.
Directed by Raoul Neave, with musical direction by Benjamin McKellar and choreography by Phoebe Clay, The Producers is bound to both pleasure and shock the senses. So prepare to be transported onto Broadway, with a unique arrangement of laughing, crying, 'sieg heil-ing' cast and ensemble in this latest hit show from MUSOC.
