Schola Go To Norfolk!

Project Summary

Schola Cantorum, a choir from Christchurch, has been invited by the people of Norfolk Island to help them celebrate their Thanksgiving Day Service on 27th November 2013. In the past the island had a strong tradition of choral singing but this has recently become lost and everyone is excited about the prospect of Schola Cantorum rekindling this tradition.

About Schola Cantorum

Schola Cantorum has sung in concerts conducted by Sir David Wilcox and many other well-known conductors. Schola Cantorum also sings the rich tradition of early secular music – rounds, madrigals and other forms from many countries, as well as “crossing over” into more modern territory, such as currently performing Patrick Shepherd’s "Elegy for a fallen city". Our current Musical Director is Roger Buckton of the University of Canterbury School of Music. He is assisted by David O'Beirne, who appears regularly as a soloist throughout New Zealand and who is undertaking an Honours Degree, also at the University of Canterbury.

More About the Project

In total 45 people will be making the trip. Individual members of the choir are paying their own expenses but the choir has opened the trip to music students from the University of Canterbury and has raised funds to offer scholarships to 6 students, significantly reducing their costs and making the tour affordable to them. Whilst on the Island the choir will also present a concert and the musical directors will tutor at three 2-hour choral workshops for the people of the Island. The workshops are open to all ages and abilities, although they are likely to be of most benefit to children over the age of 10. Whilst we have been able to raise funds to provide scholarships to the students and to cover the costs of a planning trip we still need funds to contribute to the costs of our Musical Director, the costs of providing sheet music for everyone and paying a small fee for a piece of specially composed music. To cover these costs we need $2,000.
