Collab Project with Viewfinder Magazine

Viewfinder is a magazine and network for creators of NZ indie film, video and web TV (and their fans). The bi-monthly Viewfinder mag is packed with inspirational interviews with indie filmmakers as they share insights into making their latest productions (from funding through to distribution). Our monthly email digest keeps subscribers up-to-date with events and opportunities in the NZ filmmaking community, along with heaps of tips and advice, and case-studies from around the world to learn and grow from. We’re proud to promote and inspire creators of NZ indie film, video and web TV projects.

Unit 6 is a short film in which a young woman trying to escape her past is unexpectedly saved by the very thing she thought threatened her future.

Image driven and dialogue free, it promises to be a compelling cinematic experience – beautiful, fraught and tense – that will hook anyone who enjoys a good story, well told

The project has received $10,000 from the New Zealand Film Commission as part of its Fresh Shorts short film scheme. In its funding decision the NZFC described the script as “sophisticated, with a bleakness that gives this film a kind of poetry” and noted that writer/director Jane Sherning Warren “has pulled together an excellent team for a beautifully written and well-constructed film”.

We’re thrilled to have received the NZFC’s financial support, not to mention such a glowing endorsement of the project’s potential and the creative team who will be so crucial in making it a reality. We are also humbled by the amazing crew and cast who have come on board and are volunteering their time and expertise. Yes, they are doing it all for nothing!

However…

While battling with a schedule that involves shooting at dawn, dusk and night, along with three days on location and managing a newborn baby on a beach, we’ve come to the realisation that $10,000 just isn’t going to cut it.

We need your help!

Another $5000 will let us make a finished film that honours all the work these talented people have put in.

Pledging any sum at all towards this total will earn you our eternal gratitude, not to mention a warm fuzzy feeling from having helped bring a life-affirming film to the big screen. And, of course, as you can see on the right-hand side of the page, we’re also offering a plethora of desirable rewards to our wonderful supporters.

There are other things you can do to help as well. Telling your friends and family about our campaign and sharing it online will also be of enormous assistance to us, and we’d love for you to ‘like’ our Facebook page and to follow the film’s progress via the regular updates we’ll post there.

Thanks for your interest in Unit 6; we look forward to the opportunity to share the finished film with you and the wider world early next year.

Rewards coming your way

06/11/2013 at 9:20 PM

We’ve received contact details for all the wonderful people who supported UNIT 6 via PledgeMe, so pledgers, you can expect to receive your just rewards within the next week or so. Except, of course, for those of you who selected rewards that involve the film being finished – at this stage, UNIT 6 is scheduled to be completed by March next year, so you’ll receive your due then. In the meantime, here’s Tilly Grant (aka Amber, aged eight) accepting a hug from writer-director-producer Jane Sherning Warren on your behalf.

Thanks, team

22/10/2013 at 1:48 AM

And we're there!

15/10/2013 at 9:37 PM

And with 10-and-a-half hours to spare, we've made it to target! Thank you so very much to all the people who've contributed to getting us over the line, whether by spreading the word and/or pledging. Take a bow all those who've pledged since last night's post: Carolyn Beaver, Eleanor Barron, James Morgan, Joe Hitchcock, Kathleen Anderson, Peter Worrall, Simon Sherning, Tanya Batt, and Virginia Pitts. Just lovely. The happy, humbled smile plastered across writer/director/producer Jane Sherning Warren's face right now looks very much like this:

24 hours and $585 to go...

16/10/2013 at 9:38 PM

With just 24 hours to go until the campaign finishes, we’re quietly confident of hitting our target if the current pledging momentum is maintained, so please, spread the word.

Huge thanks to all those pledgers who’ve got us this far, including this most recent crop of lovely, generous people: Julie Brunton & Matt Grant, Nick Ward, Diane & Ian Grant, Aroha Awarau, Chris Graves, Cindy Chung, Cushla Dillon, Geoff Lealand, Gillian Ashurst, Gregor Cameron, Lily Grace Mercedes Worrall, Melissa, Michele Hine, Steve Eyles, Tanya Barlow, Vanessa Alexander, Wendy Gunthorpe, and the apparently inevitable Anonymous. Woot!

Getting ever closer

11/10/2013 at 1:46 AM

Thank you to Leanne Radojkovich, yet another Anonymous (hadn't realised that was such a popular name), Jenny Hellen, and  Michael Stephens for their pledges. We're almost at the $3000 mark now!

But wait, there's more: see Viewfinder [http://viewfinder.co.nz/blog/articles/production-spotlight-writerdirectorproducer-jane-sherning-warren-unit-6/] for a just-posted Q&A with Unit 6's writer/director/producer Jane Sherning Warren.

Plenty of progress to share

09/10/2013 at 8:29 AM

A lot has happened since our last update: the smooth, successful shoot finished mid-morning on Sunday after a 4.30am start in order to film dawn breaking over Takapuna Beach; the footage has been logged so the editing process can begin; and we’re over halfway to our PledgeMe goal.

Many thanks to pledgers Dawn Collyns, John Smythe, Michael Keall, and three kind people who all happen to share the same name (that’d be Anonymous) for helping us get this far.

For more, visit our Facebook page, where a slew of new photos have been posted. And please don’t forget to share this project with your friends and family.

The first day of UNIT 6's week-long shoot is about to commence - exciting!

Fortunately all today's shots are interiors, and the gloomy Auckland weather suits the emotional context of the scenes.

Be sure to check in on our Facebook page for more frequent updates.

And we're off to a great start

26/09/2013 at 9:27 PM

Just three days into our PledgeMe campaign and we're already over a quarter of the way to reaching our target! We're thrilled and humbled by the support and interest we've received so far. Particular thanks to our pledgers Dave, Raewyn Glaister, Amanda Lane, Liam Bachler, Chez Staples, and the attractively mysterious Anonymous. Especially big thanks to Virginia Sharplin, who swooped in and snapped up the one top tier reward – we really look forward to meeting you at the cast and crew screening!

We will be updating here on occasion but to see much more regular postings, please check out our Facebook page.
