Awesomeness Comedy At The Edinburgh Fringe

My name is Rosie Carnahan Darby, and along with my husband Rhys Darby we plan to take three award winning Kiwi comedy shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August.

While all three shows are performed by wildly talented comics and have already proven that they are successful, the reality is they need to either sell their first born to the devil or fundraise to cover some of the marketing costs.


They have saved money for flights, worked hard to pay for accommodation and resigned themselves to 17p baked bean diets.  The outlay for the entry in to the Edinburgh Fringe Guides is 746 pounds, that is $NZ1500 per show.  Then the cost of flyers and posters is additional.


What do you get for supporting these shows?  The knowledge that you are helping develop and support the NZ Comedy industry!

An invite to a very special event in Auckland on MONDAY MAY 7 at 7pm during the NZ International Comedy Festival. Hosted by Rhys Darby, you will see a short version of each show and have an opportunity to chat to Rhys and Rosie about why they are doing this.

Jamie Bowen as Munfred Bernstein and his Cabinet of Wonder.

Initially this show was funded by Creative Comedy Initiative from the NZ Comedy Trust.  It was devised with  Benjamin Crowder and directed by Jesse Griffin.



Square Eye Pair with Eli Matthewson, Hamish Parkinson and Elise Whitson.

They won the Auckland Fringe Festival Best Comedy Award with this show.



 

Chris Brain in A Better Place

Chris won the Billy T Award with this show in 2009.  He has also toured extensively with Rhys Darby supporting him on his Australasian tour.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank you all so much for your support, even though we did not make our funding goal.  But we were warmed by the fact that so many of you were keen to support us, so we are going to try again...after the NZ International Comedy Festival!

As we did not achieve our goal your cards will, of course not be charged, and we will not be putting on the Thankyou show on Monday night. 

Have a lovely day, and I hope you are all seeing lots of comedy this month!

Here is a short video from Square Eye Pair showing you their training regime. To be honest, if the are truly training for Edinburgh there should be a few shots of performing to 10 people, drowning your sorrows in flat lager and some weird cough that you just can't get rid of...

it all makes us stronger!

Festival starts tomorrow...

Dear Supporters!

I feel like we are all crawling up a great big hill.  Come on guys, it will be way easier if you get your mates along!  At the moment the show on May 7 will resemble an Edinburgh show, as I count a mere 8 of you...while this is fabulous practice for Edinburgh, we are optimistic and like to reach for the stars.  Rhys is used to audiences of at least 98 now, but will settle for 50.

We are in the final stages of proofing programme listings for the Fringe, which makes it all frighteningly real.  WIth all our friends arriving from the UK and Australia for the NZ International Comedy Festival (starting tomorrow) everyone is talking about the festivals.  I have been excitedly telling fellow international comedy workers (comics) how excited I am to show these shows in Edinburgh, the worlds biggest trade show for the industry.  So I cannot wait to get there and welcome Team Awesomeness NZ into the international comedy fold.

Right, that is it from me, festival starts tomorrow...SO MUCH TO DO!

I feel like we are all crawling up a great big hill.  Come on guys, it will be way easier if you get your mates along!  At the moment the show on May 7 will resemble an Edinburgh show, as I count a mere 8 of you...while this is fabulous practice for Edinburgh, we are optimistic and like to reach for the stars.  Rhys is used to audiences of at least 98 now, but will settle for 50.

We are in the final stages of proofing programme listings for the Fringe, which makes it all frighteningly real.  WIth all our friends arriving from the UK and Australia for the NZ International Comedy Festival (starting tomorrow) everyone is talking about the festivals.  I have been excitedly telling fellow international comedy workers (comics) how excited I am to show these shows in Edinburgh, the worlds biggest trade show for the industry.  So I cannot wait to get there and welcome Team Awesomeness NZ into the international comedy fold.

Dear Supporters and future supporters!

As I sit here in the lounge at LAX with my glass of Kiwi Pinot and an ex Baywatch star behind me (literally), I think of how my life has changed since Fancypants (Rhys Darby) found success on the television.  11 years ago we saved up enough money for a plane ticket, then convinced my Mum to pay for the other one and took off to Edinburgh full of wide eyed optimism.  By year 3, when our friend was running a bar and looking the other way when we nicked sandwiches every day we still maintained our blind optimism,  Thank GOD! 

By supporting these three shows, you are essentially taking the role that my Mum did.  Paying to get us out of the country so we would stop nicking food from her fridge.  But the joy and satisfaction that Mum gets out of knowing that she has supported us in our dreams must help her sleep deeply at night.  Think how proud you will be when you see one of these 5 wonderful acts shine, and you can say to everyone at the pub on Friday night...I helped!  

We are planning on having a special show on Monday May 7 in Auckland.  Rhys will host it and we will show shortened versions of the three shows.  There will be wine, homemade baked goods, frivolity and the opportunity to ask Rhys and I to our faces, what the hell are we thinking and when will we stop encouraging bullshit.  Well, we will tell you, NEVER!! Comedy is an important part of our society, and taking our unique brand of Kiwi humour to the world is necessary.

Right, time for another glass of pinot before I board my Air New Zealand flight home.
