The Art of a Hut

My art project is to draw and sketch the backcountry DOC huts of the North Island while traveling from hut to hut and staying in them this summer. Afterwards I plan to come home to my studio and work on larger finished charcoal and graphite works for an exhibition.

We are planning to leave this November for the summer.  It will be an exciting opportunity to get a real first hand experience of our New Zealand huts and to convey their characters and stories in my drawings. We also wish to eventually publish a book of my drawings along with the stories of the huts and our own experiences of them.

My name is Felicity Deverell I am a 20 year old artist from Northland. I am passionate about drawing and busy making a career out of it. I will have a support crew of two people coming with me. Caleb Bergstrom is the co-author of the project. He is 19, was brought up in the country in Hawkes Bay and is a true Kiwi guy with a passion for hunting, fishing, and exploring our country.

To make The Art of a Hut project possible we need your help so that we can buy art supplies and gear before we head off on our trip, and also to pay for fuel to get from hut to hut and for food. We really need a camera so that we can document the adventure and share our experiences with you. We also need proper sleeping bags so we wont freeze in some of those huts up in the mountains where it snows all year round!

I've written heaps about it all on my blog. So visit there for lots more about The Art of a Hut project.
