I'm a Kiwi folk song collector, balladeer and singer / songwriter with many CDs and books to my credit.
My lifetime's work (almost 50 years) and driving passion has been to make the world at large aware of the Kiwi folk music heritage and inspire people to further investigate our folklore stories, songs, yarns and vernacular verse. I have been fortunate to win numerous awards in New Zealand and around the world for my work. I was Rotary International's folk performer of the year in the early 1970s and later won the Hoso Bunka award in 1977 in Japan for my Radio NZ documentary "Landfall New Zealand" beating 60 other entries from around the world. While I was living in Perth I also received an award for my contribution to Music in Western Australia in 1995 and have won best folk album 3 times at the NZ Music Awards as well as being a finalist on 3 further occasions. Two of my songs were included in the United Nations Songbook during the 1970s.
ROCKONZ (the Christchurch based Musical hall of fame) inducted me with a lifetime contribution award in 2007 for which I was extremely grateful. Later that same year Steele Roberts published my book 'Faces in the Firelight' which took an in depth look at the New Zealand story through folksong, stories, yarns, lies, verse and humour.
This upcoming tour of Australia will enable me to present our Kiwi folklore and song to Australian audiences from Brisbane down to Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and smaller towns across Sth Aust, NSW and Victoria. Already there are artists singing and recording some of these songs in Australia and further afield and this will be another opportunity to achieve more exposure for our musical heritage.
Thank you for your help in achieving this.
