About

A Toaster

Project 2013-05-21 01:48:52 +1200

An intelligent yet paranoid young man has his sense of identity slowly corrupted by his toaster.

My name is William, and I'm a student filmmaker about to finish my Diploma of Digital Filmmaking at a local film school. It has come to the time where we have to put together a short film to show off exactly what we have learned throughout our course. I want to go a step beyond and create a piece that would not only be submitted as a final project, but as a short film in as many festivals as I can place it in.

THE FILM

I want to make a short film that resonates with audiences, both in terms of quality and content. A film that challenges and engages the viewer. A film that completely blows the hats off those expecting 'another student film' and getting a festival-worthy production.

The film I want to create is a Psychological thriller focusing on how a person may react when they find that their identity is being corrupted by forces outside of their control. In the case of the narrative, a man receives a new toaster under mysterious circumstances and finds, strangely, that he can only refer to it in the first person. As time passes, he finds himself having horrendous hallucinations and slowly starting to believe that he is, in fact, a toaster.

THE POINT

I envision the film as a look at what happens when the fear of identity theft and the paranoia of the saturation of technology is objectified by a piece of technology that has been our homes a lot longer than computers...

THE ORIGIN

The film will be an adaptation of the acclaimed short story "SCP-426" which can be read in full here:

http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-426

The author has given his blessing for this production.

As for myself, I have created several short films during my course which can be found here.

THE BUDGET

At the moment I am preparing to make this film with a budget of $0, but with the help of those who believe in the project I hope to raise it to the next level. With the budget goal of $10,000 I would be able to:

 - Hire locations, props and transportation for equipment ($ 2,500)

 - Commission professional storyboard artists and make-up effects ($ 2,500)

 - Pay for actors and extras ($ 2,500)

 - Reward pledgers (including a DVD with commentary and making-of for those who pledge $35 or more) and recompense Pledgeme itself. ($ 2,500)

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon!

Getting Closer, Rivals Appear

All right guys, it's starting to get to crunch time. We're over halfway there on my Pledgeme to realize my dream of producing a professional short film, but some stumbling blocks have been placed in front of us. for one, there's a good $4000 still to go, but for another... I have competition! Another team has put up a pledgeme for a horror film, they've asked for 10000, and they only have 8 days left too! We gotta beat them guys! the time is now! I'll be posting excerpts of the rough drafts of the script and storyboards for all to see soon. We can do this! The first SCP movie WILL be made! with YOUR help!

Wow!
