Help develop young creative writers and readers!

Help send 15 clever kids from Christchurch to Brisbane to present and talk about their literacy success at an international conference for English and Literacy.

WHAT and WHERE?
Wai Study Help is a programme that aims to accelerate English language learning for Maori students. Each of the tamariki who participated are students at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Whanau Tahi. All subjects (other than English) are taught in te reo Maori. They start learning English in Year 5 and only have 90 minutes of English learning each week. Teacher and researcher Melanie Riwai-Couch created Wai Study Help to see if English language learning could be accelerated for these students.

It worked! Wai Study Help pulls together people from the community and achieved amazing results! Melanie and the students have now been asked to present at a literacy conference in Brisbane to showcase the model and celebrate the success of the students and Wai Study Help.

We need your help to get 15 children and 4 adults to “Brave New World: English and Literacy teaching in the 21st century”, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, 4-7 July 2013. The whole trip will cost $18000,00 and for just $1800.00 you can help purchase return airfares for three tamariki.

RESULTS
Wai Study Help has been a transformational programme for students who have now developed a love of reading. Parents have reported that their children are now reading regularly and are more confident with both reading and writing. Assessment data shows dramatic gains for many of the students. Through a period of extreme challenge in Christchurch, Wai Study Help students have excelled. Earthquakes and school mergers have been a very real and ongoing threat for each of them. In 2012 students participated in two Christchurch based conferences. Being able to articulate their journey, individual and group success has been transformational for them. As well as being a great opportunity for conference participants to hear first hand from students, it has helped them to be resilient and positive in the face of adversity. The students see the invitation to present at this international conferences as a real boost and recognition of the hard work they have put in to their learning.

Please note: Wai Study Help is not funded by the Ministry of Education!
