Collab Project with DocEdge
Set up in 2004, The Documentary New Zealand Trust is a non-profit organisation promoting documentary filmmaking and advocating opportunities for New Zealand documentary filmmakers. Its signature events are an international film festival and a industry event. The Documentary New Zealand Trust brings new business and filmic opportunities and great exposure to New Zealand and is committed to making the Festival and the Forum the biggest such event in the Southern Hemisphere.

We are first time documentary filmmakers and we need your support to get our film seen across the globe! We will use the money raised to follow Gone Curling... to the festivals it is accepted into and to promote the film while we are there.
Our first stop the Edinburgh Film Festival!
Why? Because film festivals offer film makers a prestigious opportunity to talk about their film and what they went through making it. It gives us a chance to meet other filmmakers and discuss future collaborations, innovative ideas and our passion for telling better stories.
Film festivals present opportunities to land distribution deals. This means more NZ films for the world to see. If a film isn’t sold within six to 12 months, it is considered ‘old’. So we only have a SHORT TIME to get it seen by the right people.
A film about curling, what were you thinking?
Our film Gone Curling… was made in collaboration with Natural History New Zealand and the Otago University as part of our Masters in Science Communication. We chose curling because it is a sport fused in Scottish heritage, close knit community and bizarre protocol, it is shrouded in secrecy because of its roots in Free Masonry and it attracts only the most colourful of character. Somewhere in there is an educational science element as well, we promise. The film will be promoting Otago over in Edinburgh, Canada and Korea as it hits the festival circuits. "We hope that countries that are proud supporters of indoor ice curling will delight in learning about the game's roots,” says director and cinematographer Rachael Patching. But this film is not just for the keen curlers of the world. The film gently addresses climate-change issues, and the effect warming weather patterns have on small communities that rely heavily on winter for recreation when winters are too hard for working, and for the very social values that keep people bound together. The film is light-hearted and its cinematic grandeur does justice to the stunning Otago region.
We wouldn’t be doing it if the film wasn’t great!
Gone Curling has already been invited to screen at the 2012 Documentary Edge and Reel Earth Film Festivals in New Zealand. So clearly we are not the only ones that love our film. Please help us share it with the world.

Naseby trips must happen during mid June to end of July. This is because it is the only time of year Naseby is likely to have a hard enough frost to freeze the ice. If for some reason the curling ponds haven’t frozen when you arrive you can still have the same experience but on the man made out door rink. (Not the plastic ice)
If Gone Curling does not make it into the Edinburgh Film Festival the money raised will go to promoting the film in other film festivals such as Toronto. The aim is to participate in the festivals and follow our film wherever it goes.
If something happens to Sean Becker like he gets asked to teach the Japanese women’s curling champs and has to leave NZ, Jock or Ken will be more than happy to have a couple of whisky’s and throw a few stones with you.

news and awards
07:29AM Thu 24/05/12 on Gone Curling...
Well our film 'Gone Curling' is doing tremendously well ! with a 100 percent award rate for entered festivals. 'best New Zealand short film' award (Documentary Edge Film Festival) and 'best emerging talent' (Reel Earth Film Festival)
We still have two more screenings of the film in Wellington and we would like as many people to come along to it as possible- So if you have friends in Wellington tell them to get along for a great wee story about a the remarkable people of Central.
Our Pledge Me campaign has taken a massive jump up, raising over $18,000 toward our goal of $21,000.
With only 19 days left until it closes we need your help to push it over the line. Please encourage your friends and families to pledge their support. It is a worthwhile cause to promote New Zealand film abroad and reach broader audiences. Prizes include a trip to Naseby and a chance to curl on natural ice with the stars. You will be treated like Scottish Royalty and make life long connections with the community as we have. We know how the curlers like to celebrate so the Old Doctors Residents has kindly offered their luxury B&B for you and a friend.
Remember that if we do not make our target in 19 days then we loose all the money we have raised so far.
Please direct you friends and colleges here to watch the trailer and pledge their support
