Betty Van Gaalen Film
Project 2013-05-09 01:50:27 +1200
Documentary of the life and work of Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast icon, Betty van Gaalen QSM.
She has been instrumental in changing lives for the better in the communities she has lived in, particularly Wainuiomata. A woman in a man's world, ahead of her time, she would "talk to the dustman the same way she would talk to royalty". Chair of over 30 committees during her career, her early life in England set her on a path of breaking down barriers and stereotypes.
This documentary about her life and career, illustrates her tenacity and committment to community from a young age. She planned to finish all her jobs that she had started by the time she had retired, and she did. The then Labour Party leader, Hon Helen Clark was guest speaker at her retirement function in November 1998, showing the regard for which she was held by fellow politicians.
The production team is Errol Maffey and Diane Richards of Nimlin Productions Kapiti Coast.
Funds are required for travel to the Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata to interview on camera Betty's former colleagues and to film the locations she has talked about during her first two recorded interviews, which were filmed last month.

More Gems from Betty

We have just finished another interview with Betty today. This is the third and final one. She talked for nearly three hours and entertained us with stories of famous (and infamous) people she has known over the years. A charming story about the Duke of Edinburgh and very fond memories of David Lange to name just a couple. If you want more, pledge and help to get the project finished. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Betty and her husband Bill for having us invade their living room with our camera equipment, and we are grateful to those who have pledged so far - we appreciate your support.
