Collab Project with DocEdge
Set up in 2004, The Documentary New Zealand Trust is a non-profit organisation promoting documentary filmmaking and advocating opportunities for New Zealand documentary filmmakers. Its signature events are an international film festival and a industry event. The Documentary New Zealand Trust brings new business and filmic opportunities and great exposure to New Zealand and is committed to making the Festival and the Forum the biggest such event in the Southern Hemisphere.
DRUGLAWED is the first in-depth feature documentary to fully examine how New Zealand Green got rolled up in the disastrous U.S. War On Drugs.
Over the last 100 years the United States has forced its drug control policies on almost every country on earth. 40 years since Richard Nixon declared the War On Drugs in 1972, 22 million Americans have been arrested for marijuana. Only one country in the world has higher arrest and conviction rates: New Zealand.
Through cannabis users and growers, police officers, economists, scientists, doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, we examine the cause and effect nature of the cannabis business - an industry whose fierce profits are driven up by its illegal status.
But is cannabis the deadly drug menace that the government claims it is? Are billion dollar budgets to prohibit it justified? Globally, 6 million people die each year from tobacco-related diseases, 5 million from alcohol, half a million from pharmaceutical drugs, all legal drugs… and zero die from cannabis.
Has the prohibition stopped people from using cannabis? NZ has the world’s highest rates of cannabis use, followed closely by the US – cannabizness is booming! What’s the number one cash crop in Northland province? Marijuana. What’s the number one cash crop in the United States? Illegal pot harvests are worth more than corn and wheat… combined!
Meanwhile the uses of cannabis as fuel, fibre, building material, paper, food and medicine, plus its fifty thousand industrial applications also remain forbidden by law, driving up the ecocide-wreaking profits of oil, chemical, cotton and forestry corporations.
Who else is profiting from the illegality of cannabis? Big Pharma, Alcohol & Tobacco - the legal drug industries. Isn’t it curious that alcohol & tobacco kill 100 times as many people as all illicit drugs... combined?
DRUGLAWED investigates how New Zealand has been ensnared in an international war-without-end against the most useful plant on the planet.
DRUGLAWED has been in production since August 2009 and will be released in APRIL 2014. Featuring Bomber Bradbury of The Daily Blog and an international cast of commentators filmed across New Zealand and in Australia, the US, Japan and the Netherlands, all principal photography has already been completed. $150,000 funding was received in 2010 from NZ On Air for the TV3 version of the documentary INSIDE NEW ZEALAND: HIGH TIME? which examined the issues from a purely local perspective. In order to complete our original objective of making a 90 minute feature film which places New Zealand's drug policies in an international context, we have built upon what we shot for television by subsequently investing a further $21,000 into the production. Our target of $5,500 will pay for animated sequences and motion graphics.
The filmmakers would like to thank the cast for the generosity they showed us with their time and our legions of supporters who have enabled this epic shoot to be accomplished!
WHY "DRUGLAWED" SHOULD BE MADE:
The NZ Government has pursued failed drug policies with zombie-like persistence since the passing of the 1975 Misuse of Drugs Act.
Our "Reefer Madness" regime has broken budgets and countless lives. Victims of the law lose their jobs, scholarships, child custody, freedom to travel, the trust of their families and neighbours, respect for legal authority, and their liberty (9% of NZ’s prisoners are incarcerated for cannabis).
The mind-bending costs of the failed Drug War are completely overlooked by a sensationalism-driven media machine that histrionically embellishes the dangers of cannabis, which has – according to the leading medical scientists we interviewed – never caused a single confirmed death through either disease or overdose.
The film charts new territory by exploring the role of the United Nations in national drug control policy-making. The UN presents the main obstacle to the removal of cannabis prohibition, by exerting pressure on sovereign nations through the International Conventions on Narcotics. This film will present the political solution for signatory countries that want to shift their policies.
DRUGLAWED blows the lid off New Zealand’s multi-billion dollar underground industry. Never before have the issues surrounding the international ban on cannabis been presented from a New Zealand perspective. This is the exposé that finally clears the smoke!
ENDORSEMENTS:
Professor David Nutt (UK)
President of the European Council of Psychoneuropharmacologists
Chair of the Independent Advisory Council on Drugs
Former Chief UK Drugs Advisor
“The public needs to know about this, so they can be better informed and therefore better influence their political leaders. Making a documentary like this one is how that will happen.”
Dr Geoff Noller (NZ)
Substance Use and Policy Analysis Researcher, Otago University
“The critical examination of drug policy is an important and neglected area of social inquiry. With our high rates of per capita use of cannabis and arrest (the highest in the world for personal use and possession), this is a phenomenon well overdue for a fresh perspective. These young filmmakers deserve the opportunity to explore the issues with fresh eyes, especially in a country where drug issues are dominated by discourses of pathology, deviance and moral panic. The perspective adopted here will provide a counter-balance to a skewed discussion, which has potentially alienated many people likely to benefit from a clearer understanding of the issues.”

Druglawed World Premiere in Auckland 24 Jan (& 25 Jan)!
29/12/2014 at 7:46 PM
The most in-depth New Zealand documentary on the Drug War is now just weeks from completion! Please join the crew for our first public screenings on January 24 (or Jan 25) at 4.20pm and 7.10pm.
To preserve our chances of acceptance into those film festivals which prefer entries that have not yet had a theatrical release, we are calling this the "Underworld Premiere" and we are hosting it in our own specially-constructed Druglawed cinema - creating a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience you will never forget!
There will be a party between and after screenings. Entry is by koha... unless you pledged on Pledge Me or Kickstarter for tickets, in which case please bring a guest, you've already koha'd for two! Let us know when you arrive if you pledged for a DVD or T-shirt. Every one of our Pledgers are acknowledged by name in the end credits, so look for your name - and thank you!

Druglawed associate producer Sid Menon, who appears in the film, was the individual who emailed The Vote's producers with the suggestion to debate the topic. Well done, Sid!
