What are Amigo Bars?

Amigo Bars are the worlds first healthy five stars rated plant-based ready to eat supplemented food bars specifically formulated for children.

What is a ‘supplemented food’?

A supplemented food is a product which has functional ingredients added to it so that it performs a physiological role greater than simple nutrition.

Perhaps the most globally recognised and used supplemented food is baby Infant Formula.

As Technical Director of Douglas Pharmaceuticals New Zealand, I oversaw the development of the original Karitane infant formula range.

Infant formulas are recommended for children from birth to four years old to ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals required for healthy growth and mental development.

Sadly, one in four New Zealand kids go to school hungry without breakfast or lunch and many more have fast-food diets lacking in essential vitamins and minerals.

So we challenged ourselves to create the best possible product formulations using ingredients that are good for our kids and our planet.

The result is the Amigo Bars.

The Amigo promise is that all our products will be formulated with care to improve the healthcare outcomes of all the world’s children

I believe that Investing in Amino Natural Nutrition and kick-starting the healthy supplemented food revolution is the best possible investment that New Zealanders can make for the future of our planet and it’s children.

Why do we need Amigo Bars?

For improved nutrition; to give our young Amigo’s the best possible start to life.

The latest 2019 UNICEF report classifies 39% of New Zealand children aged five to 19 years as overweight or obese. The only country with a larger percentage is the United States.

Our schoolchildren consume more fast foods and are addicted to sugar and fat than most countries in the developed world.

Despite the fact that many of our kids are obese, doctors say poor nutrition is also a factor in a significant proportion of the 40,000 annual child hospitalisations linked to poverty.

Dr Cameron Grant, the Head of Paediatrics at the University of Auckland, said, “malnutrition was a factor in a significant proportion of illnesses.”

“A third of children hospitalised at Starship Hospital have an iron deficiency. For example, Dr Grant said, “A lack of vitamin D is also very common. That increases the risk of respiratory illnesses.”

“New Zealand rates of iron deficiency are twice as high as Europe, the UK and Australia and Vitamin D deficiency was higher than the USA, because our food lacked nutrients,” said Dr Grant.

“However, New Zealand diets are energy-rich, meaning children could be both undernourished and obese. A situation that was not improving” Said, Dr Grant.

Our low saturated fat, low sugar Amigo Bars can provide our kids with all the essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids they need to support healthy physical and mental growth development.

Why do we need Amigo Bars?

For economic sustainability and accessibility

Our energy dense plant-based formulas are very filling and provide instant energy; are more gentle on the planet than milk and other animal-based proteins; are ready to eat and have a long shelf-life.

This means we can get good nutrition into the hands of all the world’s little amigos, no matter where they live.

Why are we crowdfunding?

For economic sustainability and accessibility

For two reasons.

Firstly, we recognise that in a COVID world we could not continue to fund the ever-increasing number of schools requesting amigo bars via a charitable model so we incorporated Amino Natural Nutrition Ltd into a “For Profit” social enterprise where our shareholders can share in our success and we can rapidly grow the company and provide kids in need with good nutrition, globally.

Secondly, we want to rouse a passionate army of Amigo supporters. Crowdfunding is the best way to do this and to thank and eventually reward our Amigo investors for their support.

Our Raison D’être

Healthy foods should be simple and available to everyone on a global scale.

Agriculture currently uses half of the world’s vegetative land. It consumes 90% of all water used by humanity and generates one-quarter of the annual global emissions.

In a world of fast food and growing global food insecurities, our Amigos are committed to manufacturing natural, healthy foods that are good for us and our planet.

In the developing world, lack of water and variable crop yields result in food shortages and malnutrition. In the developed world, many families suffer from economic food insecurities, and many more have fast-food diets that lack vitamins, minerals, and amino acids required for healthy physiological and brain development.

Finding the time to prepare and cook meals that contain all the essential ingredients for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and supporting brain health can be challenging. Sadly, many children throughout the world have poor diets that don’t give them a fair chance at life.

Nutritional Benefits

The worlds’ first five-star rated supplemented food for children.

Key nutritional benefits of Amigo Bars are:

Our Amigos are world leaders in the formulation of plant-based functional foods for tomorrows world. We use only the purest, scientifically researched and analysed natural ingredients. These ingredients must meet our ‘cradle to the grave’ environmental analysis algorithm which ensures our products produce the minimum environmental impact possible.

Our customers’ health and well-being is our major priority and what we leave out of our product formulations is just as important as what we put in. We leave out ingredients that have been labelled as common allergens for children such as milk, eggs, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans.

A team of passionate, like-minded experts

Our Amigos have extensive experience in the development and commercialisation of functional foods.

As Technical Director of Douglas Pharmaceuticals, Sir Ray oversaw the research and development of the Karitane infant formula range, which was the first infant formula in NZ to be supplemented with folic acid.

Over more than a decade, the Amigo nutritional research and development team have developed a significant body of valuable intellectual property (IP). This IP covers a wide portfolio of products supplemented with natural amino acids, vitamins, and minerals including: ‘Amigo Bars’, ‘Amigo Super Soups’, ‘Amigo Natural Fruit

Drinks’, sports nutrition drinks and therapeutic foods for the prevention and treatment of protein-energy malnutrition and sarcopenia in aged care patients.

Our Amigo team understand the science of good nutrition and plan to commercialise our IP via a combination of product retail and licencing agreements with major sports nutrition companies and therapeutic food manufacturers.

Our Amigo team includes some of the best creative brand advertising experts in New Zealand, supported by nutrition and pharmaceutical scientists and regulatory control experts.

Our Story

Our Amino Natural Nutrition products have been over ten years in the making.

Our products are based on fundamental scientific research and many years of consumer testing product validation and stability testing.

Help us make a world of difference

Our Amigo Bars are loved from Kaitaia to Kathmandu but we need your help to make a world of difference.

Over the past year, The Sir Ray Avery Foundation has donated thousands of healthy Amigo Bars to New Zealand school children, and children around the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that we cannot continue to rely on donations alone to meet the ever-increasing number of families and schools who desperately need our help.

We have established Amino Natural Nutrition Ltd as we believe a social enterprise model is a more equitable way to thank our supporters. Together with our charitable foundation, we are committed to improving nutrition on a global scale.

With our valuable portfolio of intellectual property (IP), we could secure funding from venture capital investment companies, but we would rather build an army of Amigo shareholders, who have skin in the game and who will help promote the business, and to share in our success.

In just over 18 months, the Amigo brand has achieved what many local and multinational FMCG companies spend millions of advertising dollars trying to obtain. We’ve dedicated ourselves entirely to create a reputable and well-loved brand, accompanied by an army of Amigo revolutionaries.

Who owns Amigo Bars?

Amigo Bars are a natural nutrition product researched and developed by the Sir Ray Avery Foundation (previously registered as Medicine Mondiale Charitable Trust).

All Intellectual Property (IP) relating to the Amigo Bars has been assigned to Amino Natural Nutrition Ltd together with an exclusive licencing agreement.

The Sir Ray Avery Foundation is launching a new website in Feb 2021.

Who is Amino Natural Nutrition Ltd?

ANNL is a new ‘For Profit’ social enterprise company set up by the Sir Ray Avery Foundation in order to commercialise the production and sales of Amigo Bars.

The Foundation is offering up to 24% in equity ownership of the new company to raise up to $1m to carry out its business plan. 76% of the company will be owned by The Sir Ray Avery Foundation.

Does the Sir Ray Avery Foundation charity receive a share of the capital raise?

No. ANNL is a separate limited liability company formed under New Zealand company law and separate to the Foundation. ANNL will manufacture and distribute Amigo Bars with 76% of the profits going to The Sir Ray Avery Foundation to allow the Foundation to distribute the bars to children who cannot afford them and to become self-sustainable and not reliant on donations. The other shareholders are free to use their profits as they wish.

Why is the Foundation doing this?

The Foundation has been reliant on receiving donations in order to distribute free Amigo Nutrition Bars to children in need both in NZ and overseas. In a new post COVID-19 world, the demand for Amigo Bars exceeds our charitable income and it has become more difficult for all NZ charities to thrive via traditional re COVID-19 donation channels.

So we established ANNL as a ‘For Profit’ social enterprise company to provide a sustainable income to fund more free Amigo Bars to children in need and to fund the Foundations ongoing philanthropic works.

Who are the competitor products in the space. I assume OSM bars and Made Simple bars?
What is the price point of the bar and how does that compare to Competitor products

Posted on 03-12-2020 by First Heritage Ltd

    Hi ,

    Good question.
The only way to do an accurate comparison is to compare the price per 100g as the bar sizes vary greatly in weight.
OSM can range from $2.77 - $4.20 per bar per 100 g depending on the presentation.
Made Simple Bars average around $3.00 per bar.
Amigo Bars depending upon the retail channels will be between $2.50 and $3.25 per $100g.

Important to note that these bars are not rated as five stars and contain most of the common allergens associated with food allergies documented in the scientific literature.

What is the wrapping made of, please?

Posted on 04-12-2020 by Kay Baird

    Hi Kay,

Currently we use a recyclable plastic wrapper for the amigo bars because this material guarantees a very long shelf life for the product particularly in hot and humid environments and prevents in ingress of bacteria and moisture into the amigo bars.

So far we have not found any biodegradable packaging films that are better at protecting the bars from time related degradation.

We will keep trying but recyclable packaging is the best that we have come up with so far.
    Kindest regards
