THE ODYSSEY

This summer, Northland Youth Theatre takes on the gigantic epic that is Homer's classical poem, The Odyssey. Whilst we will spin in our trademark element of youth, joy, angst and everything else that makes us teenagers tick, you can still expect to see the seductive sirens, the beasts with many faces and the whirlpool that sucks in everything and everyone too weak to hold fast; the monsters, the challenges that define this age old text.

Following the huge success of last summer's senior event, 'Quarry' which had audiences coming back again and again, NYT is planning its next big summer event with another site specific performance extravaganza with the same group of vibrant young theatre makers plus a few more. We will return to the epic surrounds of Whangarei's Quarry Arts Centre landscape to give the local community both young and old another chance to experience the Quarry space, which acts as a quiet hidden haven at the centre of the city, in a new way and share in 'The Odyssey', re-imagined through the lens of NYT's senior company. This will be an immersive, exciting and innovative journey which will weave epic and intimate story-telling to dish up an unforgettable, locally grown celebration including music, laughter, theatre and feasting.

The Road.

The Travelers.

The Luggage.

The Gods.

We're looking at a total cost of approximately $25k to get the show on the road and be able to play for the entire season, and we're looking to source $3500-5000 or more from Pledgme. Our cast of around 18 local actors is assembled, Directors and Producers are ready to roll, and we have plenty of volunteer help, we just need some money!

Our ship Parade through Whangarei!

28/01/2013 at 12:01 AM

Here's a video of the journey of our 'Ship' through the centre of Whangarei.

Thanks heaps to Gareth Mauchline and Channel North for the awesome video!

Thanks to all you who have pledged! We are almost there!

Thank you for all the support and belief in our work and theatre in Northland

Recently we've been creating through long lists full of clowns, water fights, bathing, gifts and secrets whispered to the audience. Faces have been beamed up on to the cliffs and trees around the Quarry.

Where is Odysseus? Rings out through our promenade

It is going to be wild, crazy, epic, expansive intimate, surreal, grounded and honest. A collection of contradictory adjectives crammed into a devised piece of theatre retelling the story of a man returning home, those who he encounters along the way and his family waiting for his return.

We are gearing up for something amazing and hope that what we are making excites you as much as it does us
