The Keepers

Project 2012-07-19 21:35:33 +1200

About the Show:

The Keepers is a fresh physical theatre work by Thread Theatre Company. Having one season already under it's belt in 2011, directed by Sally Stockwell, we're off to Wellington in September to perform a second 9 day season at BATS theatre. (With your help!) The Keepers was awarded the 'Best Absurd Physical Theatre Show of 2011' by Metro magazine, and is an unusual and compelling performance which uses live music, minimal set and physical storytelling.

The Keepers was described by critics as "Abstract, Eccentric, and Original", "..an ethereal, enigmatic play of dreams and feelings..It also received praise for it's soundtrack; -"Cowan's music is among the best theatre scores I've heard"-NZ Herald.

Inspired by writers Anais Nin and Marguerite Duras the play is set in a lighthouse, where a lonely lighthouse keeper is disturbed by the sudden and unexplained arrival of another woman to the island. Nina, the new arrival is sensual and playful, and shatters the carefully constructed routine and rituals Margaret has practiced during her time in isolation. Nevertheless, they become increasingly intrigued by each other's polarity.

Who is Thread Theatre?

We are four Women, who are passionate about devising new theatre that provokes, enthralls and entertains.

We are:

Veronica Brady: Actor

Julia Croft: Actor

Claire Cowan: Musician/Actor

Theresa Hanaray: Producer

New Zealand does not have a strong network for funding the arts, particularly new and edgy, 'non-mainstream' work, so we are appealing to those of you who love live performance, want to support women in the arts, and are keen to see fresh and exciting theatre being created and shared.

What do we want to do?

We, and many others, believe that 'The Keepers' is a special show that deserves the opportunity to be redeveloped and shared again, after a wonderful first season in 2011.

We are taking The Keepers down to Wellington for a ten night season at BATS theatre, from 19-29th September, following a two week rehearsal and re-development period. We are on a shoestring budget and don't need much - we are resourceful kiwis after all! The funding we hope to raise through Pledgeme will be used for:

-Rehearsal space hireage $300

-Props hireage $300

-Travel expenses down to Wellington $400

-Minimal Rehearsal wages $2000

We are all committed to working on this full-time, which means no income! That's how much we believe in this show, so we hope you will too! Thanks so much in advance!

You can gain more friends by being yourself than you can by putting up a front. You can gain more friends by building people up than you can by tearing them down. And you can gain more friends by taking a few minutes from each day to do something kind for someone, whether it be a friend or a complete stranger. What a difference one person can make! - Sasha Azevedo, Entertainer

Thank you lovely Pledgers!

Day One of Rehearsals!

08/09/2012 at 11:58 AM

"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."
- Anton Chekhov

Claire, Julia and Vee started rehearsals proper today, and have heaps of ideas on how to strengthen the show!  Very exciting to come back to the same rehearsal space that we began in last year 2011....and to meet the play again, with fresh eyes and new dreams!

Keepers Quotes

23/08/2012 at 9:03 PM

I shuddered to think how completely the insane were in the power of their keepers, and how one could weep and plead for release, and all of no avail, if the keepers were so minded.
- Nellie Bly

They become the keepers of the mystery. They place themselves between the communicants of the religion, and the immediate experience. And then they dictate the terms on which you can have contact with this wonderful mystery. We don't dictate those terms.
- Larry Harvey

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL OUR OPEN-HEARTED PLEDGERS!

Things that go bump in the night...

20/08/2012 at 6:20 AM

Hi folks! The Pledge Me campaign is rocking along thanks to our AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL pledgers - we are so grateful!

We still have a long way to go....please help us spread the word!  Perfect dinner conversation starter, handy hint for your hairdresser, or status update - Help Thread Theatre!
And if you haven't already pledged, and have a spare fiver floating around, be a good sort and chuck it our way, puhlease!

Here's a little spooky bedtime reading for y'all...some of it gets eerily close to a storyline in The Keepers - but you'll have to come see it at BATS in September to find out why!

Heceta Head Lighthouse of Florence, Oregan is said to be haunted by the ghost of the "Gray Lady," who is perhaps the mother of an unknown baby whose grave has been found on the grounds.

Also known as "Rue," the ghost is known for moving objects, opening and closing cupboard doors and other strange occurrences.

Heceta Head Lighthouse

One workman claimed to have come face-to-face with Rue in the attic and fled in terror. Days later, while working on the exterior of the building, he accidentally broke one of the attic's windows, but refused to go up there to repair it. He instead repaired it from the outside, leaving the broken glass scattered across the attic floor. That night, workers heard scraping noises in the attic. When they checked it out the next morning, all of the broken glass had been swept into a neat pile.

To the Lighthouse

15/08/2012 at 2:13 AM

“What is the meaning of life? That was all - a simple question; one that tended to close in on one with years, the great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead, there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; here was one.”

― Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse

Keep up the good pledging!  We're 20% of the way there, thanks to all our supporters so far - you're our shining lights!

Lighthouse of the Day!

12/08/2012 at 2:05 AM

Hi lovely peeps!

Here's a fact for you - The earliest world lighthouse was at Alexandria, Egypt.

And here is our feature lighthouse of the day:

Faros Tourlitis of Greece. It's unique being the ONLY lighthouse built on a rock in the sea, and is accessible only by boat and is unique. Stairs cut into its isolated rock lead to a tiny landing site, but the lighthouse has no keeper’s quarters.
Cool ay!

And thank you so so much to all the wonderful people who have pedged so far.  We really appreciate it!!

Love from Vee, Julia, Claire and Theresa
