Oral History Of Occupy Chch

For 162 days, from October 15th 2011 until March 25th 2012, protesters camped out in a corner of Hagley Park as part of a global protest against wealth inequality. Over that time what The Press described as "one of Christchurchs most unusual communities"
The strange mix of activists, homeless, conspiracy theorists, backpackers and others along for the ride struggled with the day-to-day issues of a borderline illegal camp site (including aftershocks) as well as issues of political and economic reform. After the last tent was taken down one of the remaining campers spoke the words "I te wahi nei, kua mahinga taatou te whanau kotahi." in this place, we have built the united family.
Occupy Christchurch affected everyone involved, Some of those people have vowed to continue the movement, others have dropped out all together. Each one of them has a story to tell.
My goal is to raise enough money for the recording equipment needed to conduct this oral history project, and self publish a book- with copies being donated to the Alexander Turnbull Library, Christchurch City Libraries, Archives New Zealand and the Canterbury Museum archive. This will provide an important historical record looking at what was going on locally in the early 2010s- an era where Time magazine made "The Protester" their person for the year.

The fund raising goal has been reached! this means the project will go ahead. Thankyou everyone for your support. I'm likely going to Wellington in a couple of weeks for some oral history training at the National Library, and will sort out getting the recording equipment asap.
As well as covering the recording equipment and the the pre-purchased books, about 16 books (possibly more if I can get them printed cheaply enough) can be donated to libraries and archives, helping make the stories of Occupy Christchurch as accessable as possible.
More pledges are still welcome and will help with book printing costs, at present the plan is to set money aside every week while I record interviews and use that plus the money remaining from fundraising for the first print one, with the hope I can recoup the loss by selling the books.
