About

Create Original Protest Artwork Inspired By Aotearoa History.

Project 2023-08-03 13:08:20 +1200

We're after funding to pay local artists to create original artwork, inspired by New Zealand's radical social history, for Plan B diary.

Plan B diary is a yearly planner which commemorates key dates in the radical and political history of Aotearoa. The planner includes important dates for Māori resistance movements and iwi settlements, union and workers’ rights protests, feminist and LGBTQ activism, environmental action and much more.

The Artwork

We’re working with a range of different local artists to create original artwork commemorating key dates in New Zealand's radical history. Plan B 2024 will include a total of twelve pieces - one for each month. Contributing artists are able to select an event from the dates in the planner which resonates with them, then develop a work in response to that event.

Background
Inspired by the Slingshot Organiser in the US, Plan B was first produced by the Freedom Shop in 2018 for the year 2019. Plan B continued as an A5, staple-bound booklet in 2020, 2021 and 2022 with increasing interest each year.

For the 2023 edition, The Freedom Shop partnered with Wellington Zinefest to produce a reworked spiral-bound version, complete with original artwork by artist and activist Hannah Salmon. Hannah created a collection of imagery commemorating key radical dates featured in the planner.

Hannah's beautiful, detailed artwork covered events like the Pureora Forest occupation, the protest of the Waihopai spy base, 'dildogate' and more. With the support of Hannah's artwork, Plan B 2023 was a remarkable success - our print run of 100 copies sold out in under a week. We're aiming to repeat this success for Plan B 2024.

Paying Artists
Plan B 2024 is a non-profit initiative, and The Freedom Shop and Wellington Zinefest are volunteering their time to make Plan B 2024. The shop will be paying upfront for printing costs, then selling copies at ‘cost’ - meaning there isn’t profit gained from sales.

However we want to make sure the artists who have produced imagery for the planner are paid for their contribution. All of the money raised in this campaign will be spread evenly amongst the artists who've submitted work to Plan B 2024.

Almost Ready!

Kia ora koutou!

Liam here from WZF - A MASSIVE thank you to everyone who's supported Plan B 2024. Honestly the planner is a big job, but knowing we had everyone's support has been really really motivating.

Alright, some updates... they are almost all good news and one kinda bad news.

Our Artists
All our artists have delivered really thoughtful pieces reflecting on their chosen events. We've been slowly announcing the lineup on social media, but I've listed everyone below. I'm sure some of these names will be familiar to those of you who are regular Zinefest attendees..

Alice Alva
Lewis Illman
Jewelia Howard
Cosmo Bones
Mil Hampy
Bryce Galloway
June Moth
Vincent Konrad
Charlotte Page
Winter Kneale
Lilith

I'll be sharing their imagery soon, I'm really impressed with what everyone's made.

The Planner Design
We've reworked the layout for 2024 and made things a bit more minimal, so there's more space for your own writing and functional use of the planner. It feels tidy! It feels cool! I hope you like it!

The layout is now 99% finished - we're just putting the final touches on it and doing one last round of edits before we go to print.

Here's what a top secret preview of what a spread looks like:

Printing the Planner
We were all set to have the planner ready to launch at Wellington Zinefest Weekend, which is October 7 and 8 at Vic's Te Aro Campus on Vivian Street. Tragically, today we found out that our printer now aren't to do the job for us. So we're scrambling a bit to find an alternative printer. At this stage, it looks like it won't be ready for Zinefest, but we're still pushing to have it ready very soon.

Preorders
I'm hoping to open up for preorders as soon as we can! The last thing for us to do before we can open these is secure another printer. Once we've got that sussed, we can work out the exact costings. There will be planners for all! I will email everyone once we've got preorders ready to go, so keep an eye out.

This PledgeMe is gonna end in three days, so if there's anyone else you know who would wanna be involved, tell 'em to get in quick ok?

Thank you again friends, looking forward to sharing our creation with you all x
Liam
