About

Help Nat Take Seasick Sunscreen From Her Kitchen To A Factory

Project 2023-06-23 02:10:40 +1200

I'm now FULLY FUNDED 🎉 meaning that I WILL be upscaling production and can make at least 100 kg of sunscreen at a time. That being said, let's keep the momentum going…

Since 2019, when I started Seasick Sunscreen Co, we have saved around 6000 plastic bottles from landfill (where ultimately they can pollute waterways and the ocean). If I can hit my stretch goal of $30,000, this will double our impact in one single production run!

The more money I can raise, the more plastic-free and water-free sunscreen I can make this summer and therefore the more impact we can make together!

Thank you for making my dream come true. Where wearing sunscreen is a good experience for everyone and where business protects both people and planet.

Kia ora, I'm Nat

Driven by my passion for ocean conservation and sustainability, I'm building the world's first sustainable sun care company.

Unhappy with the long list of unnecessary ingredients and plastic packaging found in conventional sunscreens, I started making sunscreen out of my kitchen in Wellington back in 2019.

Since then, demand has quickly outgrown my ability to make enough sunscreen.

This is why I need your help, so I can increase Seasick Sunscreen's social and environmental impact by upscaling sunscreen production from 100kg to 350kg with a manufacturer.

Otherwise, I'm stuck making the sunscreen myself, in my kitchen, and won't be able to meet demand. Our customers are asking for more than double what we're producing.

Ngā mihi maioha

Nat

Founder, Seasick Sunscreen Co

The Problem

the problem

With the highest rate of melanoma in the world, sunscreen is essential for protecting our skin, especially in New Zealand. Why use sunscreens made from a long list of toxic chemicals (plus up to 70% water) in a plastic bottle when there is another solution…

If you've followed our story, you might remember the 2022 drama when we tried outsourcing sunscreen production. Operating like this isn't sustainable, but as a small NZ business, options are limited. If I am stuck making it in my kitchen, scaling our impact is not possible.

The Solution

Seasick Sunscreen is better for you and the planet. Our sunscreen is made with just 7 naturally-derived ingredients in sustainable packagingIt rubs in clear and won’t cause stinging eyes or painful skin irritations. You can also feel good about your purchase giving back, as 2% of our revenue is donated to ocean conservation.

What’s in it for you?

If we meet our minimum target then you will take home one (or more) of our awesome rewards! If we don't meet the target you don't pay anything and I go home empty handed.

What You Have Helped Us Achieve So Far

What’s Next?

I'm currently making around 100 kg of sunscreen a year (8 kg at a time). Increasing production from 100 kg to 350 kg would mean it becomes viable for us to work with a local manufacturer, we will be able to meet the demand for our products AND we can increase our social and environmental impact. I need to make at least 100 kg of sunscreen this side of Christmas followed by another 250kg in the New Year.

Together, let’s save 10,000 plastic bottles from landfill and donate thousands to ocean conservation.

Who We Are

Natalie Jones: Founder

Seasick Sunscreen Co is a social enterprise started by a fair skinned, red headed ocean lover and sun worshipper (that's me Nat, hi). I am on a mission to stop ocean pollution caused by plastic sunscreen bottles and chemicals whilst actively protecting the ocean by supporting marine conservation.

My vision is to be the world’s most sustainable sun care company by taking a holistic approach to sustainable business practices - from the ingredients and packaging we use, to where we manufacture our products and how we minimise our carbon footprint. I believe that doing business for people and the planet (not just profit) is key in accelerating global climate action

With just 19 days left and still over $11,000 to Crowdfund, I'm hoping you can share my campaign with ONE person that you think might pledge. Please ask your friends, whānau or colleagues to pledge for sunscreen! With summer is on the way, their pledge will not only protect them from the sun but will also help me move Seasick Sunscreen from my kitchen to a factory.
