Mamas In Lockdown is an emotional and inspiring collection of personal stories from over 70 parents who were pregnant or gave birth during lockdown.
Author, writer and advocate for mums, Denise Ives has started a PledgeMe campaign with the aim of reaching $20,000 by Monday 23 November 2020 to have these stories published in a beautiful book so they can be shared with their loved ones and the world.
Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the people of Aotearoa New Zealand, especially those having a baby. From giving birth without the support of a partner or chosen midwife, to having a home birth instead of a hospital birth - the changes have been unexpected and disconcerting for many. While supporting families with breastfeeding during the lockdown period, it became very clear that parents needed to talk about what had happened.
Many hours were spent listening to parents, and Denise knew how therapeutic writing their stories had been for a couple of these mums. So she put out a call for others to see if they wanted to write their story to share in a book. Denise was flooded with many incredible, heartfelt, emotional and empowering stories. The stories have been formatted in digital form and are now ready to go to print. Denise is 100% committed to honouring these incredible wāhine and their families by making this happen. Parents need to tell their stories, they deserve to have them heard.
Pre-order your book or choose one of the other rewards, share with your family and friends.
Thank you!

How to order your books
23/11/2020 at 7:19 AM
Thank you everyone for your support so far. Sadly the PledgeMe campaign isn't happening for us, but that's ok.
Mamas in Lockdown is still happening!
The stories, and the reasons for writing them, are as important today as they were a few months ago when this project started. As one mum said, "It was a hard thing to write, but it has helped me to put it into writing".
After the PledgeMe campaign finishes at 1pm today, order your copy of Mamas in Lockdown here: https://deniseives.com/make-a-purchase/
For our business sponsors and those who pledged money to help make Mamas in Lockdown happen, I would still love (and really need!) your support. Please email me: [email protected]
Thank you everyone! Enjoy your book, it is truly beautiful. It will touch your heart and make you think.
The PledgeMe campaign ends soon - what happens if it doesn't hit target?
20/11/2020 at 6:32 AM
First of all, thank you for your Pledge! We have three days to go so please keep sharing with your family, friends and businesses who might like to sponsor us. It's not over yet!
From the first moment I had the idea to create Mamas in Lockdown, I wanted the end product and the process of writing to be something that every story contributor would be proud of. I know that writing the stories has been a cathartic, therapeutic and difficult thing to do for many of the parents.
From the very start, I have been determined that every story will be heard - I am still 100% committed to that.
So for all those reasons, I went ahead and ordered 500 copies of Mamas in Lockdown anyway :-)
The book exists, it is real!
So what happens if the PledgeMe campaign doesn't hit target?
The way the numbers sit right now, it's looking likely that we won't hit target. If that happens, the campaign will close and none of your payments will be taken by PledgeMe - you will not be charged, I will not receive any payments. You will not receive any rewards.
But that's not the end!
Everything that was listed in the PledgeMe campaign is still available, and I'm all set up to get your rewards and orders out to you.
To order your copies of books and knitted breasts, go here: https://deniseives.com/make-a-purchase/
If you are a business sponsor then email me: [email protected] and I'll send you the bank details to continue with your sponsorship package.
If you're not sure what to do, or have any questions at all, drop me an email: [email protected].
Your book is here, it is beautiful!

Are you experiencing technical difficulties?
02/11/2020 at 8:49 PM
Hey everyone,
Thanks to those of you that have pre-ordered Mamas in Lockdown or made other pledges.
We've had a few reports of difficulties when trying to place pre-orders for books or make other pledges. Some people seem to get stuck in a loop where they enter their address but it's not recognised and they keep getting re-directed to add their address again.
If you have problems, please let me know, and it would be great if you could also contact PledgeMe and let them know too.
The problem has been reported to the PledgeMe techy group and they are looking into it.
Thanks!
Denise

So now we have new reward - Buy 2 Books. If you've already bought two books using the Buy the Book reward, don't worry, you'll still get your two books, I've just hopefully made it easier to make that choice now!
Please keep sharing the link and telling people about this wonderful project. I know the parents who wrote the stories are so excited to see their words and photos in print :-)
Thank you
Denise

The stories in Mamas in Lockdown are so powerful. Written by the parents in their own words, they are emotional, raw, happy... and sometimes sad.
"These narratives locate us in a time and place where there is still much to learn. The book gives life, space, vibrancy, feeling and validity to the experiences of women and their whānau and has been a therapeutic tool of consolidating the birthing experience."
If you have already pre-ordered your book, thank you. If you don't want to buy a book, please support our campaign by sharing it with everyone you know... these stories deserve to be heard.
