Carepacks For Carers

Project 2017-12-03 21:09:51 +1300

A while ago. I met this amazing lady named Timmy Smith from Waiheke Island. She wears many hats, a mother, a business woman, a community warrior, tea blender and jewellery maker just to name a few. One thing that struck a chord with me was her passion to support Starship Hospital where she had to make countless visits for her daughter.

As a new father of two young children, I could not imagine what it would be like to stay at the hospital while caring for your child. It must be a frightening experience to see your beautiful child fighting for life. You will be doing all you can to care for your child. Caring for yourself, especially in an emergency situation, I can only imagine that it will be the last thing on your list. Yet, the carers need to be cared for too.

Timmy, based on her own experience, has decided to create Carepacks for Carers.

Carepacks for Carers is about providing “Knowledge, Nourishment and Connection” for carers.

It will be packed with information and knowledge that parents need to know about their stay at Starship Hospital.

It will be packed with items to nourish the carers like healthy snacks and care products.

It will be packed with means of connection like a simple cell phone charger. But mostly a connection to the group of supporters, like YOU. To let the carers know that they are not doing this alone.

I was moved by Timmy’s story and her positive spirit. So I have decided to support Carepacks for Carers project by setting up a crowdfunding campaign with PledgeMe. Also, I will be participating the Epic Swim 10 km race in Lake Taupo in Jan 2018 to help raise fund for this project. This will be a challenge for myself, as I have never swum 10km in open water before.

The money raised will be used to create the first few hundred carepacks to give great momentum to this project. The Carepacks for Carers will be made sustainable via “Pay Forward” model, where a carer who receive this carepack will be given a choice of buying a pack or two for other carers. We believe in the power of the crowd and putting a small effort together to make a big impact.
